GOOD EYE!! Correct sir...
We are knee deep in the diag tear down of Edmond's 2001.
We are chasing a noise I believe is a timing chain tensioner or follower...

In the process we will probably port the intake(short of cutting it in half and re welding it)

I also would like to bring your attention to the MASSIVE amount of PCV oil residue that these cars are so famous for!

This condition is extremely common on all 32v Fords/Mercs/Lincs...

It is serious because the oil vapors mixed with the air/fuel severely lowers the "effective" octane(ability to resist detonation) of the mixture.... PING!!! PING!!! PING!!!

I found this fix on another forum... and I recommend it highly!!!

Those running the catch device can monitor the difference(it's huge!)

Check it out----> http://www.modularfords.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31889

yup, the oil separator which was on the car about 100 miles before the tear down already has quite a bit of oil in it. I also noticed that the car did not really Ping anymore after just one separator (drivers side). I still have to do the passenger side also.

The instake was really gunked up with oil, but its clean now :D and just needs to be polished. This explain my slight oil consumption, and why the 01's smoke on startup every once in a while.

Between the mesh in the valve cover mod, as show on Mod Fords, and the oil separator, that should help if not eliminate this from re-occuring.

Pretty much ALL 32V DOHCs are affected by this issue...

Because there is no baffle in ANY OF THEM!!... It is just an oil splash shield... not a true baffle ... which would cause the air to twist and turn forcing it to slow and drop the oil held in suspension.

This is a long standing, well documented issue with our cars(you push rod 5.0/5.8 owners are spared this problem)...

This the best solution to date that I have seen!!!... short of running a $4,000.00 dry sump system!!! :eek:

I just wish pulling the valve covers was a bit less involved :mad:
