I've noticed a little clunk when apply power after coasting for a while.
So, I'm doing my pre-track inspection and fluid change and I discover
that I can twist my drive shaft back and fourth just a little. A clunk
from within the tranny house can be heard. Both sets of U-Joints seem
fine. Any suggestions or predictions.

Just a question to narrow it down some. Were the rear tires on the ground or in the air. Did the rear end turn that much without turning the rear tires ? I would think you would get rear end gear lash problems before and gear lash problems inside a trans.. But these arent the best trany's out there :(

The car was up on jack stands without wheels on. I didn't see it for
myself but the drive shaft rotates way to easy to be spinning the hubs
in my opinion. Maybe it is in the rear end. I'm no mechanic.

I did notice that the car rolled back and fourth more than usual
while I was loosening the lugs. The car was in 1st gear w/o the
e-brake.

With the rear end off the ground and the transmission in gear, make a mark on the tire 12" from the center (approx.). Roll the tire in one direction until all lash is out (just before the other tire starts to turn), then rotate the tire in the other direction until the lash is out. Measure the distance between the white marks in both postions. If it is about 2 inches everything is perfectly normal. A bit more is acceptable.
