Please join The South Central Region of the SCMC as we look to have our 2005 Open Track Driving Education Event at MSR Houston December 3-4, 2005.

This event will be limited to 65 entries. Slots are filling up fast, so sign up online today so you do not miss your chance.

MSR Houston is a 2.4 mile long road course skillfully designed to develop and intensify your driving enjoyment. MSRH has 16 turns and demanding straights that offer numerous opportunities to test you and your vehicle’s capabilities. Here is the track website with more track info:
http://www.msrhouston.com/

Instructors: This will be a driving education event, and will not be timed. Instructors will be provided to ride with and teach the lower open track skill level drivers (or anyone who request an instructor). This event is all about having fun while learning to better drive our cars. There will be drivers attending from all skill levels, 1st timers to those who race professionally.

Run Groups: The SCMC reserves the right to constructs the run groups accordingly. Drivers will be placed in run groups with other drivers of comparable skill level.

Safety: To build upon our safety emphasis at last year's event, our first concern is the safety of the drivers. We ask that everyone follow the proper guidelines for safety equipment. Your car will need to be inspected prior to the event, and there will be tech inspection before your car is allowed on the track. More details to come in the driver packet provided after registration.

Helmet: An SA95 or better helmet is required. Still finding out if the track will have loaners.

Important Updates about Convertibles: Although we have allowed verts in the past, the MSR Houston open track event on Dec 3-4, 2005 will require convertible to have proper roll protection. This does not include light bars. You must have either a welded or bolted in roll bar sufficient enough to protect you and your passenger (factory installed functional rollover protection will also work).

Late Registration: There will be a $25.00 late registration fee added on November 19, 2005 on top of the event price.

RV\Campers:There will be 10-15 camper spots with water and power hookup at the track. There will not be sewage disposal for the campers however.

Ditto!!!
I'm JAZZED!!!

I think I goofed up my application though :retard: Somehow it ended up at intermediate....(I checked novice...???? it's a mystery to me???)

I would love to run in that group.... but I don't think they are going to count all those years of autocross.... and ice racing...

I'll be happy where ever they put me...

If I'm in intermediate... I'll keep an eye on the mirrors.
If I'm in novice... I'm pretty sure my mirrors won't need constant monitoring...lol

I am interested and was just looking at the track and where it is located, about 300 miles from Allen to there.

I had attended the last 2 track events that SCMC organized at TWS and had a great time. Your club wanted to do a joint track event with the SVTTexas club and this would provide that.

When I last ran MSR-Ft Worth, I blew my engine and had to send it down to Houston Performance to rebuild it. Well if I fall into similiar troubles I won't have to send it far to go back to Houston Performance.

I have to check into my schedule and getting away that weekend, and find out what arrangements you have organized for motel accomodations. Your club now has the benefit of being 40 mins from your house and not need a motel stay over like when you ran TWS.

Larry,

Glad you had a great time at our past events. We aren't able to do any joint events, but SVTTexas is definitely invited to the MSRH event.

As far as the track being close to our members, it is to some of the Houston folks, but remember, we are a national club. :) So we are stilll going to have a Hotel for people to contact.

The MSR-Houston track is the same distance, 70 miles, as TWS is....MSR is just a better track.

Can you verify a few things:

1. Can I use my MA2000 helmet?
2. Don't see tech inspections as a requirement, is it and if so can I use my certified mechanic.
3. I have a few friends who are novice and there are only a few instructors listed, do you plan on having enough so that every driver in the novice group is with an instructor?

I was at the open house yesterday and this track looks like alot of fun!

1.Yes you can use a MA2000 Helmet, we prefer the SA..but the MA will be allowed.
2.Tech inspection is required and yes to part two.. that will be in the drivers packet which will be sent out shortly.
3. This is a HPDE, we will have plenty of instructors on hand, the ones listed are just the Club members which are instructors.
4.There will definitely be corner workers, seing as how they just finished paving, I'm sure they just haven't put the booths up yet.
5. To be finalized still, but that is dependant of the skill group you are in. But something like Lower groups only on the straights... etc. The corner workers will use the standard flag system. Like stated in the first post, safety is first at this event, and the staff will do what is needed to ensure no one is putting anyone else in danger. Stay tuned for specifics.

KevinKevin,

As the lead instructor, I will ensure that we maintain SAFETY as our NUMBER ONE concern throughout this event. As such, myself (and my club colleagues working this event) will make sure we all take ALL necessary precautions to make the event as safe as humanly possible.

We will have plenty of VERY qualified instructors on hand to help you (and all the other registrants) learn in a safe manner. Of course, we will also plan on having some big fun as well!! That goes without saying! :bounce:

On the issue of tech inspections, I would encourage you to have your mechanic perform a detailed inspection on your car to ensure fluids levels are correct, no fluids leaking, brakes are adequate, etc... Additionally, we will be inspecting your car at the track and will apply a sticker on the windshield afterwards. Having someone inspect your car will certainly speed things up and we of course encourage this.

Is this going to be your very first ever track event???

The Mini Cooper is a VERY fun car to drive on the track - heck, it is just plain fun to drive - period!!

By the time this event rolls around, this will be my 6th or 7th event this year. I have run TDE, NASA, and AMTD this year: all at TWS. Most likely do MSR Cresson this month and next month. Will be doing Maverick PCA, LSR PCA, and TDE before SVT @ MSR....and drag race my car at Baytown against the Miata club:mad:

I asked these questions cuz I posted your event on our TX MINI forums and it got those guys all excited when the details weren't posted, so rather than ***** and moan like MINI dudes like to do, I just grabbed all their questions and posted here;) for them to read.

Heck I all ready paid, I am ready chase anything with 8 cylinders around that tight track:p

See you guys out there and looking forward to MSR Houston!

The short answer to this would be yes if you have attended a track event since your last inspection. And we say that with safety in mind. An example as to why would be, your brake pads could have worn out since your last event, you could have developed an oil leak or compromised something on the car you are not aware of , you could have boiled your brake fluid or have air in the system, things of that nature. The intention here is safety first.

Thanks! No brake fluid boiling or air in the system, safety first!

You of course know I was just yanking your chain, huh... :p ;)

You know I love the R VERY much, but let's face it... To be competitive with you guys with the lighter cars, we would have to put our cars on a serious diet. 4000 lbs is a TON of mass to be moving around a track!!!

Glad to hear it, was worried I'd gotten too "lippy" for my own good again. Believe me, I'd love to head out of state to some new tracks but the day job and family activities just don't allow much of that - another reason why I'm so pleased to see a new track coming to the Houston area!!!

Any idea what direction we'll be running the course?

Also, will there be room for the motorhome?

But seriously, we will make sure you have a good instructor to help you learn how to have some fun in your toy. We will be focusing on SAFETY first and foremost. The FUN factor will take care of itself - trust me on this!!

The biggest issue you will face with the beast you drive is controlling your right foot coming out of the corners. Our instructors will help you with this.

This WILL be the most fun thing you have ever done in your car - I PROMISE!!

As for the beginner/novice group, we are still going through all the applicants, but it appears we have at least 8 or 9 others just like yourself - First Ever Event! We are striving to have no more than 20 or so cars in each group, hence, the reason we are capping registration at 65 cars. This allows everyone to have fun, stay safe, and we have more room to put different cars in the right groups based on not just horsepower, but skill levels and experience as well.

We are looking forward to having you. Don't be shy about asking questions. This is what we are here for. You can also send me a PM if it is something you wish to discuss outside this public forum. I am the Lead Instructor for this event.

I am trying to read up on the internet and ask others about such things as what type of helmet to get and where, assume windows will be down entire time so being December - long sleeves, bring plenty of water, what else to bring ? etc etc. Typical rookie questions. WOW!!!
I sure hope there are videos from this one!!!... and zero accidents!

This event has the makings of a legend in progress!!! :hail:

I am really JAZZED about the diverse field!!!

I thought my two ton SLUG did pretty good last year @ TWS.... but WOW... I'm not freaking worthy.... The cars and drivers and INSTRUCTORS this year are AMAZING!!!

I would be willing to bet if the local TV stations saw that list of cars.... they would be all over his event with free coverage like FLIES ON $#!T!!!!!

I'm going to be conservative just so I don't get caught on camera looping out!!!...lol

Actually I'm hoping all the non members come away with a VERY VERY positive on track experience.... and will want to do another SCMC event ASAP!!!

After running with some of those cars... I may have to re-name our Cobras as the HEAVY METAL MUGGERS!!!.... With instructor and driver... I am going to be just south of 4200 pounds!!!

There are some outrageously light and nimble... delightful automotive morsels in that field!!!

I'm in total agreeance here Jimmy. I can't wait to see all these sweet cars in the paddocks. I'm trying to get a friend to come out and take some pics in addition to Jack Puryear being there.

I know my Cobra's going on a diet before MSR....already dropped about 10lbs with the aluminum driveshaft.

Time to start doing my 12 oz curls with the left arm to get in shape for all the point bys I will have to give. :baby: What a list of cars and drivers!!!

This is going to be a great event!! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Ok, thanks for the response. I am trying to read up on the internet and ask others about such things as what type of helmet to get and where, assume windows will be down entire time so being December - long sleeves, bring plenty of water, what else to bring ? etc etc. Typical rookie questions. Will the instructor drive the first two laps and then hand over to me..:baby: ? I can't wait...:DThere are always great deals on SA2000 helmets out there. Just do a Google search on "SA2000" or "racing helmets"... Expect to pay around $200 to $500 for a helmet. The final price will depend on whether it is open face or closed face, and whether or not it is lined with Nomex (which is fire retardant material). I would recommend a closed face nomex helmet if it fits your budget.

yes, on the other stuff... water, long sleeves, closed toed shoes, AND sunscreen!!

We will most definitely do at least 2-3 laps with the instructor driving your car (at low speed) to get you acclimated to the track. Then, the instructor will let you drive while we likely do some lead/follow laps, again at very low speeds. The second session is where you will be driving and receiving instruction during and after the session is over. Expect to have an instructor with you the entire time during the weekend.

Any other questions/concerns, do not hesitate to ask! I was of course a newbie too at one point, so I know what you are feeling right now - ANXIOUS!!! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Unfortunately, due to club rules and insurance purposes, only registered drivers or instructors are allowed inside your vehicle (you guessed right!)

As for the track, we will be running the 2.4 mile course in the counterclockwise direction. Although there will be more than one course at this new facility, we will be limited this time around to the long course.

Any other questions, do not hesitate to ask?

May I ask if this is your very first ever track event? just wondering? Either way, welcome aboard!

Hi Andy,

My car is actually a RUF 3600S conversion. Lets just say it is a tad bit quicker than a standard BoxS, which are by no means slow themselves around a track. This track, though, looks like it has a fair number of decent-length straights. Is it as big a horsepower track as it looks? I hope all those high HP cars have the brakes to cope with slowing down in all those turns.

I have been doing track events with the DFW Porsche folks for about 5 years now. I am very familiar with MSR Cresson, the TMS infield, TWS a bit, and am quite excited to try a new track out. What I love about MSR Cresson is that it is so technical. Lots of good tricky stuff to make the drive interesting. Was MSR Houston laid out with a similar philosophy? Lots of off camber stuff, etc? I hope so.

Will even the instructors have any real time on this track before the event? I assume almost everyone will be learning this track from scratch. Should make for some...entertainment. lol I assume you guys have top notch corner workers lined up to make sure everyone behaves themselves and observes proper passing protocol.
Should be a blast!

PS. lol I think you missed my point about the 'S'. BoxSter is not spelled Boxter. Unless you are just messing with me, in which case: :rotf:

Hill,

Nice car man

MSR Houston is setup to be a "fun" track as the designers put it. Basically a balance of fun/technical and enough turns and straights for everyone to enjoy. I do remember that the S turn is off camber on the first part of the turn (counterclockwise) and there is elevation changes put in throught the track, so you got your wish there.

The instructors will be able to run the track prior to Saturday, to learn it some, but its a brand new track so....

We are taking all measure we can to make sure this event is a safe one. There will not be any tollerance for misbehavior  .

The event will cap at 65 registrants, so there is still room. :bounce:

Friday night would be a informal get together, meet each other type deal that has been sort of discussed.

As far as the Friday drop off, I am getting the final confirmation on that, and will let you know as soon as I find out, but I am almost positive you can as the track is letting us do track registration/sign in/waivers at the track itself from 4-7.

when will the run groups be announced?Although we have preliminary run groups already assigned, we will still be tweaking it as the event gets closer to being completely sold out - which is not too far away now.

This is for sure though... there will be only 4 run groups, and the white group (instructors) and the green group (beginner/novice) are already pretty much figured out. What still remains is the two other groups in the middle.

For sure though, you will be notified either inside your welcome packet or at least when you arrive at the track and recieve your final event packet with run group stickers, etc.

So 4 run groups all total, including the instructor's group? Leaving 3 groups for the rest of us? So that is about 22 cars per run group? On a track that long, that should yield reasonable spacing, I would think. With 3 non-instructor groups, there will probably be some serious capability delta's within each group, though. 2 sessions in the morning, 2 in the afternoon each day? 20 minutes long? With only 4 run groups, you should be able to either get in another session in the morning and afternoon, or run longer than 20 min.

Andy M

I've been at TWS with nearly 30 or more cars in a run group, and although it can get a little backed up at times if one car is a lot slower than the rest... 2.4 miles is a very long way around... so, I would think 22 or so cars per group should yield some good fun and still keep things safe.

Our main focus is SAFETY- First and Foremost!! So, whatever we must do to ensure everything stays safe? That is what we will do. The fun part will come along for the ride!! :bounce:  ;) :) :D

Additionally, we are still tweaking the timing of the sessions. We will of course always try to maximize your time on track - whenever possible. I think we can safely say we will be doing at least 4 sessions per group per day.

I think I talked a guy in a SVT Cobra at TWS into signing up yesterday. It was fun running with the snakes, and I'm looking forward to doing so again at MSR-HOU.

The more I want to do this the more it seems I can't. The date puts it firmly in the middle of finals for me and I dont know if I can spend a weekend (cause I would want to devote a whole weekend to it) driving quickly instead of studying. :(

I'm pretty sure my mirrors won't need constant monitoring...lolYOU HAVE BEEN TARGETED FOR TERMINATION!

The snake eater is here!!! Have you told everyone the truth about this lil tag I see!? (I feel so loved by SVT) Had a blast at last TWS track day with you guys. Looking forward to feeding some snakes and horses to the M3 in Dec.

Big thanks to Mike Krause for reminding me of this event, and howmuch you guys miss me from last year. Can't wait!;)

RRRUT RRRO...

I'm looking forward to another outstanding dice!!!
To be honest... not knowing how tight the track is... I may not be any fun for you... If it's tight I'm thinking you will prevail.... If it's fast sweepers or fast complex decreasing radius stuff... I may be an entertaining challenge for you... In my second ever open track event...(I've done other stuff though ;) )....

I believe I have been honest about our fun at TWS... it sure wasn't a walk in the park... I have always said it took many laps before I could get by... VERY CLOSE MATCH UP!!! Which I didn't expect... I figured M3s were :hail: :hail: :hail:

We were very close at TWS... this track who knows????

We need to be safe about it... and if you are on my bumper I will let you by....

I heard it's kind of technical... I hope so!!! I like a challenging track...
I just hope it's not too much for my stock brakes... and cooling system :(
If it is I'll just run up to the capacity of the car... or my driving .... which ever comes first :p

I guess we shall see.. I may have to change my sig pics :p they are over due anyway :D
Perhaps a new "victim" ;) :D :p

Hey everyone - please say a prayer for my brother: He broke his leg, fractured foot bones and concussion today at Texas World Speedway in College Station.

He was airlifted to Temple, his wife is on her way this evening from Houston to see him, I am going in the morning.

He was at a Porsche sponsored DE event running in the advanced group. He just had coilovers and oversized brakes put on his Mini this last week.

I don't have any details as to what happened, I was at my son's football game when I got the phone call.

Thanks
Jason

I agree Troy!!!
The learning curve will be interesting and challenging!!!
I never thought I could even keep an M3 in sight let alone have all the fun we had at TWS!!!
I need to keep my (relic) body and car intact!!!
So I hear you on the keep it safe part!!!

I heard from Edmond that clockwise is safer at MSR and not so tough on the brakes... so that was reassuring!

It should be a fantastic event!!! One we can tell our grand kids about!!! Mine might even be there...lol!!!

is that where the Trans Am flipped his car a few years ago???

From reading the description, that is EXACTLY what happened to the Trans-Am, put two wheels off on #7 , overcompensated and flipped. They need to do something about that turn.

Hope he makes a speedy recovery

Better runoff are desperatly needed at that place. Rick from TDE said to forget saving the turn, and to steer straight with both feet in, but that is hard to apply psycologically.

As for the details of this crash, I will wait for Kevin to post about it, he is not shy to discuss the details of track happenings.

It is a terrible thing in our hobby whenever anyone gets hurt. Cars can be replaced, people cannot. I too hope for a speedy recovery.

WRT the August 2003 Trans Am incident at turn 7. The car flipped, errr rolled after it shot across the track traveling backwards, left the pavement and planted the rear right corner into the backside of the drainage ditch. The car then pivoted about the back end and spun ½ turn and then rolled twice over the passenger side and stopped shiny side up.

The part about putting two wheels off and over reacting by lifting off the gas (lightens the rear end) and turning the wheels to get back on the pavement can often result in the classic and dreaded 210 degree rotation and shoot backwards across the track maneuver. This maneuver can be performed in most turns on any track. The additional feature with this maneuver at turn 7 is the ditch on the inside of the turn. The ditch is needed for rainwater drainage and while there may be several physical solutions to make the inside of turn 7 more car friendly the best defense when presented with this problem is to ride out into the grass on the outside of the turn and admire the wildflowers.

Actually TWS is relatively open with generous runoff at most locations. Many other tracks have more Armco, trees, tirewalls and concrete barriers to worry about.

I didn't see where it was T7 for sure? Hope we get an update on his health soon, best wishes.

I agree entirely, one way to get into big trouble in Turn 7 CCW is to try and save it by jerking the car back to the left after going two wheels off on exit. I have gone off there and I simply drove straight while trying to get the car slowed down from a very high speed off. No sense trying to save a bad situation at those speeds - that is a very fast corner.

It took longer than I wanted but the car finally stopped, I saw some new sections of land back there but didn't hit anything hard and was able to return to action for the weekend.

Kevin is doing better, he is talking normally now and they just got him up off his back yesterday evening for the first time since the accident.

Edmond/Andy - you can take Kevin off the list for December 3/4 MSR event. I will still do the event (my first) and yes I will be overly-cautious.

The Porsche club guys were telling me to be careful because of the following:

1) New event at new track - coordination issues
2) Instructors don't know the track
3) None of the participants know the track

On another related subject - isn't there a walk-in shop where I can buy a full-face helmet somewhere on Richmond, one of the Porsche guys told the name was "Pro-Am" or something like that.

thanks
Jason

Pro-Am is on Richmond. Brown 2 story building on the left hand side of the road as you are heading east. It is just past Fondren I believe.

If you have an SCCA membership I beleive they offer discounts.

Jason, Glad to hear Kevin is recovering.

Being that I was following in his footsteps, I also got a big scare so you will not be the only cautious one. I did like the lack of obstacles when I got my ride on the new track, just lots of grassy fields. Pro Am is a highly recomended place.

Jason,

Glad Kevin is doing better. I have bought Parts from Pro-Am before, they are a nice shop.

As far as safety, I can understand the anxiety for this being your first event, and I know that alot of people are not familiar with our club. Our instructors will get a chance to drive the track prior to our event Saturday. Like I said previously, we strive every year to make this a safety first event, and especially so with the "new" nature of this track\event.

Also, you have a PM. :)

That must be me as I seem to be the only other Mystichrome and I'm not Jimmy. I am looking forward to it. I might squeeze in a session at Cresson on the 28th if I can get the car set up again real quick. It might be fun to run both MSR tracks within a week. I'll be chasing you soon or maybe vice versa!;)

Jason,

Yes, they are absolutely correct on all three counts. Hence, why we (the Instructors) will be arriving early on Friday afternoon at the track to run some laps/sessions to learn the track. As Edmond mentioned, we will be striving for SAFETY first, so the instructors will be controlling the pace out there. And I want to make one thing perfectly clear - We will NOT be tolerating anyone who is not safe out there. Students who continually spin out or are observed driving recklessly even after repeated warnings/consultations by the Grid Marshal and/or an Instructor will be black flagged. And if the problem persists, that student will be asked to leave the facility - PERIOD! We will not be tolerating any nonsense out there.

The object is to stay safe and have FUN! :bounce:

Glad to hear Kevin is doing ok. I assume his Mini was a total loss?? :( Did it have a cage??

KimDitto, and I have confidence in Kim's new track (the other Kim, the one with the GT). I'm no expert, but while I saw a few spots of concern, nothing that outright scares me like TWS's #1, #2, #7,#8, #9, and the last two of the stooges.

When do we find out about run groups?

Also...been wondering...I haven't seen many (any?) cobras out at road course track events I have attended, and I was just wondering about their brakes. I know cobras are very capable at hauling some serious a$$, but are the brakes up to lap after lap after lap of hard driving? Have most people upgraded their brakes? Cobras are pretty heavy cars, yes?

There are quite a few cobras signed up, so I thought it a pertinent question. As someone with very good brakes, I want to know the cars that come roaring up behind me on the straights due to big HP are going to be able to brake adequately for the corner without using ME as large bumper to slow down. :)

Maybe cobra brakes are awesome. I have no idea, so I thought I would ask the question.

TIA

Miguel
11-08-2005, 11:59 AM
Most cobras should be very light as they were made before all the dang regulations that made cars heavy. As long as they have decent disc brakes all around they should brake ok. Aren't most 'cobras' just modern replicas anyway?

I'm familiar with your feeling when I drive on BW8, and some idiot tailgates me in a pick up truck (Lightnings excepted). I know that if I need to slam my brakes, that I would be hit.
Hopfully part of the education would be for folks to learn the braking point of their indiviual cars.

American car stereotype's aside, what do you consider adequate enough braking?

Got my snakes confused:baby: , I didn't see any probelms from the SVT cobras at TWS, they ran in all classes without a problem. Well I didn't see any CJs, but I don't see any of those signed up. They would be dangerous because of all the drooling:drool: .

I freely admit stereo-typing is probably the reason for the question, but not having been behind the wheel of a Mustang in a while, I thought it worth the asking. I don't consider TWS a course that is particularly tough on the brakes. You can carry a fair amount of speed into most of the corners. But then this track may be similar. Who knows.

The Elise's and the GT3 need to watch out for all of us. lol

Should be fun! :bounce:

PS To answer the question about what is adequate...brakes that can take lap after lap of hard braking with no serious fade, and that stop in fairly aggressive distances (less than 190-200 ft from 80-0 MPH). There are some hard core track cars in this group. They will be flying and braking hard. I know the cobras are up to the "flying" part, but can they stop over and over and over again in the same distances as the other cars with which I am more familiar? That is all I am asking. How much do I need to be watching my mirrors when I approach a corner? I am not suggesting anything. I just would like to know the capabilities of cars that I have not been on track with much, especially considering how numerous they are. Maybe they all stop on a dime with never a hint of fade. I have no idea. lol

Yup, I saw a couple of snakes on N. Fry road last weekend, and they didn't look stock at all. My stock brakes were fine with me, but the instructor &itched about them, so I did the usual pad/powerslot/s.s. line/fluid upgrade. Now they &itch about my stock tires, so I'll bring a set of Yokos to MSR-HOU, and I do agree about my stock runflats being a PITA.

well just to clarify,

the 93 Cobra came with 10.84 in. vented disc in the front and 10.07 in. vented disc in the back and were fairly light to all other cobra's.

Cobra's from 94 and up came with AT LEAST 13 in. vented disc PBR™ twin-piston caliper in the front and 11.65 in. vented disc, single-piston caliper in the rear with Bosch™, three channel, four-sensor system ABS. The Cobra R's of 93, 95, and 00 (the only 3 years they made them) have better brakes than the regular Cobra's of those years.

MSR is fast, just like TWS is, plus, if you can outhandle us, then you won't be braking in front of us :p ;)

agreed on we bothl will be whooped by some of the cars on the line-up

Street pads fade after repeated hard use, doesn't have much to do with the chassis they ride on. I'd think that you should be watching your mirrors as you approach EVERY corner, regardless of car make behind you.

Are you going to be solo? If not, you may want to ask these questions of your instructor for more precise information before entering the track.

Firme, no cut up brakes? I better get my oem rotors back on ;) :D .

those with weaker brakes usualy just brake earlier so rear ending should not be a an issue. But I do agree about watching the mirrors, it avoids accidents and with this big crowd it will avoid trains.

If not, you may want to ask these questions of your instructor for more precise information before entering the track. If I spend much time watching my mirrors approaching a corner, I am going to be in trouble. I don't even look at my gauges approaching a corner. I agree the burden is on each of us to watch out for others, but our prime concern is making sure each of us does not directly interfere with others.

The point about pads and chassis is a reasonable one, but not entirely accurate. OEM Porsche pads are pretty darned good, and you can drive the heck out of them for quite some time on the track, with very minimal fade. They are a very good compromise pad between track and street, I have found. I doubt the same can be said for all other OEM pads, and I can't depend on everyone having upgraded.

Okay, I guess extra caution will just be the watchword. At the driver's meeting, I think it should be stressed to folks that there are cars of very different capabilites on the track, and so everyone should be extra careful. I don't care what kind of brakes you put on a car, a 3500 lb car will not brake in as short a distance reliably as a reasonably equipped 2800 lb car. Physics.

I would expect to solo having driven MSR Cresson extensively, and TMS and TWS, but since I am not in charge, who knows. lol

At the last TDE-DE at TWS there was an even wilder distribution of automobile types and driving talents with zero incidents, so it is not such a big stretch. Plenty of Vipers, M3s, p-cars in the same run groups as mustangs, civics, Camaros etc.

I am new here to these boards, but learned about this event on SVTP. I was interested in signing up, but then I noticed that the event was full, so then I was wondering if spectators allowed? I would like to get out there and meet some of you guys and watch yall tear it up on the track.

How long / far to get to the coast, or to good fresh seafood reastaurants?

Did someone say already what times the track will be open on Friday? Can we leave stuff out there? Trailers, etc? MSR Cresson is usually pretty safe for leaving stuff overnight.

Which part of the track aren't we running, referring to the pic on the scmc web site? Didn't someone say we aren't running the full track?

PS I asked a buddy of mine about cobra's and brakes (he owns one) and he laughed and said I was a "porsche pr!ck". lol So for anyone I may have inadvertently offended with my question, I humby apologize. I just don't know anything about cobras. Cars with that much HP can be more difficult to drive than those with less HP, so I just wanted to find out if the overall car was engineered to handle the HP. Sounds like there are no worries. I can't wait! :D

I had a chance to do a couple of near full speed laps as a passenger today at the msr/houston open house in a M3.This will be my 2nd DE only, the other being at TWS in oct..I personally think this track is more newbie friendly than TWS. Real easy to see what's coming up ahead of you. Coming off the last turn there are some cement dividers to watch out for, other than that lots of smooth run off room ..... David 02' s2000

I also went to the open house ... on Saturday.

WOW!!!
What an amazing track!!! The visibility is like no track I have ever seen!!!
We ran counter clockwise... and yes I noticed that wall also!!!
We rode with Jerry in a Mercedes SUV that handled great!!!
I believe the plan is to run counter clockwise... which I'm told is even more newbie friendly.

Kim was blasting around in a couple amazing cars!!!
A Carrera GT!!!
And a Turbo Bentley with 4 or 5 people in it!!!

I'm JAZZED!!!

Got home and tore the Cobra apart!!!
New front pads.. speed bleeders and fresh fluid...
The rest of the fluids are next.

A word of warning to all Cobra owners!!!
My 04 only has ONLY 10k miles on it...
AND THE FRONT PADS WERE DOWN TO ABOUT 2MM!!!
EDIT---> insert pic here...

Make sure you have plenty of pad... as well as fresh brake fluid!!! They would probably not lasted more than one session!!!

Now I do admit that the car was purchased specifically for adrenalin production... and it is quite good at that task!!!

Make sure you take a look at your pad's friction material thickness while you are bleeding the brakes.... otherwise you could have your fun cut short at MSR... and suddenly be thrust into the rotor buying market place!!!

I think I saw a purple Mini arriving as I was leaving Saturday...

I saw a couple of Mustangs leaving MSRH Saturday afternoon, I've must have missed you by a little. You are right, the ride in the MB wachamacalit was nice, but the hot lap in the M3 was awsome, even showed me where the braking points for the 3 more intresting spots are at. Hint; it is not where you first think it is. I was by the wall taking videoclips with my cheapy cam, it took all i had to keep the M3 on camera as it wizzed by, but there was no way i could turn fast enough to keep that V-10 monster in view. The big guy next to me made worried noises whenever Kim made funny noises with the Carrera GT, apprently it was his car.

Agreed:thumbsup: , that pit wall coming of the last turn in CCW was scary:eek: !!

Now I need to re-study the map. Nailing that chicane is gonna make a big difference of how you enter the big straight, food for thought for those with lots of ponies.

Pit in would be as you come off the big carusel, pit out would spit you out into the short straight between turn 1 and turn 2 (CW). The reverse was scary because of the layout of the wall, doubly so in a DE with newbies.

they should update the map, as it is quite out-dated by now.

So we are NOT running the portion at the top of the picture. Just the portion from about 1:00 and on down, yes? (Turn 1 is the first turn after noon, with noon being straight up in the pic?) So you have a fairly long drive to get from Pit Out to the track (relatively speaking)?

TIA

James, what kit is your cobra? What engine do you have in it? I used to have a Lone Star a few years back with an FE428.

Turn1 CW should be the left most turn on the top of the picture, I'm guessing they are running the entire track. The straight on the lower part of the top half is the 'pit straight'.

TIA, I have a Factory Five Racing Cobra Replica. I built it almost 2 years ago and it was a non-donor build. It has the FFR racing 3 link, fully adjustable upper & lower control arms, Bilsteen shocks and coilovers, 347 ci by Coast High Performance (425 hp), manual flaming river quick ratio rack, and Cobra 13" brakes.

I'll have it at the Autorama in the Oreilly booth. Come on by and look me up. I'll be there a good portion of the weekend.

Ok, got back from MSR today..

Looks like we WILL be running it counter-clockwise after going over all the pros and cons. In keeping the safety theme, there will be more safety support in place for running it that way.

It does seems as there will not be nearly enough covered paddocks by december, but shade should not be a problem at this event.

A little heads up to all 03/04 Cobra owners...

PLEASE CHECH YOUR GAS PEDAL AND CARPET FOR CLEARANCE!!!

This is a known issue and can result in a stuck open throttle!!!!
Sometimes.... a WIDE OPEN THROTTTLE!!!

It happened to me and it's happened to many others... it is currently being investigated by the NHTSA.

A little trimming will keep you safe!

I fixed mine myself after a stuck throttle event.

Thanks
