I can get a good deal on a Mach 1 rear end with 31 spline axles and wondering if it'll fit in my '97. The owner thinks the 99s and up had a longer rear end, and I was wondering if anyone could confirm. Thanks.

99's and up are a good swap for 03 and 04 Cobras, but I don't know if it would work for a 97. I think you are right, their is a lenght issue.

do a search on SVT Performance

I just did... ;)

Approx..3/4" wider on each side than the sn95 housing...

Which means less room for wide tires...

I thought it was just the 98 model year that had a shorter rear end. By about a half to three quarters of an inch. Thatís why I could not get anyone to trade out rears. :cool:

after riding in the Stan-mobile, I think I'll be sticking to a solid axle. :cool:

Plus to convert to an IRS would require an IRS, new exhaust, new driveshaft and probably a few other things.

I'm VERY sure it's 94-98 SN95s having the narrower housing...
94-98 part#-> F4ZZ-4010-A .. 8.8"
99-04 part#-> XR3Z-4010-AA ...8.8"
86-93 FOX(w/o disc rear brakes)..(EDIT) part# E6ZZ-4010-A ..8.8"

I think the Fox rear ends are the same width as the SN95, 94-98, it's the axles that are different lengths. The 94-98 axles are longer to acomdate the rear disk brakes.
Mike, you could get some rims with different off set to fit the wider rear axle.
