Anyone have an opinion on the question of 4.10 vs 4.30 gear on a 99 Cobra. The car has the stock 3.27 on it and conventional wisdom says move up to 4.10. But have heard from a number of folks who say this car can tolerate 4.30's with no problem and not an unreasonable increase in rpms and gas guzzling. The car is close to a daily driver and a good chunk of that is highway/freeway.

Fire up the airways with your thoughts because a new rearend gear is probably the next go fast mod on the hit parade.

I suggest going with the 4.10's only because with the jump from the 3.27 to the 4.10 will be a seat of the pants increase as it is. Plus for the extra 4.30 from the 4.10 really isn't worth the extra gas mileage lose in my opinion.

Also, purchase the Ford Racing Ring and Pinion, don't go with any off-brands or more than likely you'll have a whine in the rear-end. ;)

Go with 4.30's. The difference between 4.10's and 4.30's is who is at the end of the 1/4 mile quicker (the 4.30s'). The difference in MPG on the road is not even measurable.

4.10's are very nice, 4.30's are even nicer.

Thanks for the input. This mod seems to be one that really makes a big difference over stock.

I can say this, I have 373's and wish I had soooo much more:thumbsup: If I had the option to do it all over again, I would go with the 430's. I have been in a 99 with 410's, and the car still felt like it needed more gear. I would change, but I am Twin Turboing the car, and from all I have heard the turbos like less gear, probably even less than what I have right now, due to loading. Honestly, I would go with the 430's, since you are taking the time and effort to rip it all apart I would go BIG:bounce:

I had 373's in my 97 and would have liked 410's but I traveled the highway alot then so I went with the 373's. I would go with the 410's and be sure to buy Ford Racing so you don't have gear whine.

Thanks everyone. I am leaning towards 4.30s because I keep hearing the two things several of you have said. One being that a 4.10 leaves you just short in the 1/4 mile (not that I spend a lot of time there) and that this car wants just a tad more than the 4.10 gives. Hopefully those of you who are supporters of 4.30s are also right about the small diff between the rpms and gas etc from one to the other.

Anyway, I am now doing the research to find out all the "hidden" costs of doing this, stuff like install kits that drive the price up...........:(
