This year our 2006 SVT Cobra Nationals will be held in September on the 23rd and 24th in South Haven, MI. While I know this may be a hike for some of you, it is also the one opportunity you will have to meet more SCMC club members then you ever have before from all parts of the country. The event will have an open track school, a car show, and the "Cobra R Challenge Race" where you will get to see Cobra R's running wheel to wheel in conjunction with the AV8SS. Also, if you enter the car show or track event you may participate in the "parade laps" during lunch for free. This is a controlled atmosphere with speeds not exceeding 55 on the track. You will be in a parade with other club members and participants from the event. On hand will be the Ford Racing trailer with display cars and merchandise for sale. The show trophies will be plaques and some of the most unique type you have probably ever won at any show. I hope many of you will put this event on your calendar for this year. Caravans are coming from Charlotte/Raleigh NC, Boston MA, Wyckoff NJ, Knoxville TN, and Wannamingo MN. If you know you will 100% be attending, please post here!

Tony, I just thought I'd add a little something:
For those who want to try driving at speed on a road course for the first time you couldn't ask for a better track than GingerMan. GingerMan Raceway offers lots of run off room when mistakes happen, it's fun and challenging even for experienced drivers, and the entire facility and staff is first rate.

For those spectating, there are excellent views of almost the entire track available.

Lance had some cold start issues that turned out to be low compression. He's someone else's problem now. I am a poorer but wiser man, having had a crash course in diesel mechanics.

I am definately going to try to make it up there for the sat. show and meet everyone. Don't know yet if I will have the brakes and tires I need for the track, although I am going to try to put some slotted rotors on and get some fresh Nitto's.

Eric

06-29-2006, 10:03 AM
Hey Eric,
Do you have braided lines for the front brakes? Those are a necessity for the track. Slotted rotors are fine for bling, but definitley not necessary. Put some Performance Friction Z Rated pads from Autozone on there and you're good to go.

Either way, see you there! :bounce:

Eric_red94
06-29-2006, 11:41 AM
Braided front brake lines, got it. Thanks. You're right about the rotors, my stock ones could probably be surfaced (only 50,000 mi.) and put on some new pads. Probably time to re-do the fluid also. Thanks for the info. One day on that track (if I do it) will probably get me a new pair of rotors anyway.

Rick, I see that you will be tent camping? Do you need to reserve a spot, or is it first come first serve. Will they run out of camping spots? Camping sounds like fun, colleen and I have not got out this year, combine the best of 2 worlds.

tgentry
07-14-2006, 12:20 PM
I'm not Rick, but I'll be tent camping. As far as I know, there are no reserved spots, but I've never seen them even close to running out of room. Nice shower facilities, but no campfires allowed other than the communal fire down by the pond.

Just look for the BIG Swiss Army tent (aka "Tent-Mahal), that's us!

most anything goes at gingerman! accommodations at the track range from tents to rv's to taj mahaulers!

most of us get there some time on friday....the track usually has "open track friday evenings" from 5:30pm til dark, usually around 9pm....for 50 bucks, you get track time before the saturday/sunday event! :bounce:

but, check with the track to confirm this is offered this weekend....

I got her running last weekend however I'm still fighting a brake bias problem.
I'm getting too much rear brake but don't know why. Everything seems to be
working well and I have bleed the lines twice. Getting a lot more rear brake dust and temps are higher than in the fronts. Hard braking chirps the rears before the anti-locks take over the fronts. I'm confused.

I already missed the SVTOA Gingerman outing last weekend due to a family
wedding. Of course my cobra was not track ready anyways.

Allan,

Be sure you mention the club's name as we have 20 rooms blocked for us. They need to look and see if they have them all booked or did you just call the 800 number? Call the hotel direct (the number is in the events packet) and tell them that the club has a blocked set of rooms. They should be able to fix you right up. :)

Does anyone know for sure if there will be a test and tune session Friday evening?

mojosvt
08-29-2006, 09:58 PM
I have a few other questions as well as finding out about the friday test and tune. I have a converable with an autopower 4-point rollbar. Do i need some sort of arm restraint? Also, I have a 6-point harness for myself. I am currently working on finding something for the instructor. IF I can't track anything down by the event, do I need to remove mine, so that driver and passenger have the same restraint? Thanks guys, can't wait to see ya'll soon, and meet a ton of new people. Mike

tgentry
08-30-2006, 10:02 AM
I think having unequal restraints would be the instructor's judgement call. Speaking for myself, I wouldn't have a problem with the factory belts, but obviously I would much rather have a harness.

As a driver, I'm responsible for the safety of anyone else in my car. I try to make sure that passengers are at least as well protected as me.

Arm restraints have not been required in the past, and I don't believe there has been any change there. They are a good idea though.

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

Cobra-R
08-30-2006, 10:11 PM
Arm restraints are not required, but I would recommend them. They are cheap and non-intrusive.

Tom is right, we would like the instructor to be protected at least as well as the driver, but the ultimate call is with the individual instructor. If you want to be safe, setup the passenger seat the same as the drivers.

OK, it's time for my annual plea for newbies to join us at the track.

Dear Newbies,

Gingerman is a very fun and safe environment to test out your car and find
out what it will really do. All the people there are wonderful and helpful. The instructors are great(even T.G a.k.a. Mr. Spin and D.R. a.k.a Sandstorm)

Don't worry if it's your first time out. There's always someone on the track slower than you (i.e. Mystic Cobra w/S.C. plates) Heck, we even let ladies and farm trucks out there.

So come on out and join the fun :D

p.s. Let the Trash Talk Begin! :p

Larry,

I have been having e-mail problems all week. McAfee keeps telling me I have a "system error" and sometimes my mail doesn't get through. I got your e-mail for the MI list and the order form from the show.

If you guys really want to help me out, you will go to other Ford boards and post the event and let everyone know it is open to any type vehicle for the "on track" portion. That would be a tremendous help so we can move on to other things. :)

Other than giving Tony the shirt count, I have no details on the shirts other than what has been posted here. Tony, you have more info?

We appreciate all the offers for help, it is amazing how everyone in this club is so willing to pitch in and help out, we will be taking you up on your offers. ;).

I can help set up friday untill the kids get out of school (9am to 3pm). After I get the kids we may be back at the track. My son and I can be at the track on saturday as eary as you need us. Will bring van or Cobra depending what you need.
Do you need anything done on thursday? Larry and I may be able to help with that.
As for the car show Larry I not going to do anything fancy I paid to show more to bring money into the club. It wont look much different than the last show we went to. The more cars there the better our club looks

Brian & Tony,

Are we allowing the instructors to give passenger rides at Gingerman?

We have a club newbie that is considering a Gingerman visit to meet some
club members and see the track. He doesn't think that his car will be
ready for the track in time. I would like to invite him out but I didn't want
to suggest a passenger ride if they are not allowed. Let me know. Thanks.

Saturday night will be the bbq like we had last year. Which reminds me, anyone that has equipment to project videos onto the side of a trailer or something simular so we can all watch, please speak up.

To the rest of you, bring videos that you think others might enjoy, whether it be doing something silly, a close call, good race footage, whatever.

NO, it's not a Hertz GT500 it IS a Hertz Mustang GT. I believe that Ford upped the HP by 25 for this model. You can only rent it in SELECT locations. I highly doubt that Gingerman is one of those select locations. The places that do have them right now are places like Vegas, Orlando, and other vacation destinations. I thinks that miss Lisa will be disappointed to find she can't rent one close to the track. :(

All 500 cars are identically equipped with Ford Racing's Power Pack making the GT-H's 325hp. They also use Ford Racing's Handling Pack which lowers them 1.5 inches and makes the ride firmer than a stock GT. All are equipped with automatic transmissions, but use 3.55 rear gears instead of the normal 3.31's for the automatic. Each car has a numbered plaque on the dash signed by Carroll Shelby. Number 013 has already been involved in a mishap, hitting a deer on I-80 in Pennsylvania, damaging the hood, right front fender and drivers door. GT-H #001, which was never rented out, was auctioned off at the AirVenture Museum in Oshkosh, WI, bringing in a winning bid of $250000 as fundraiser for EAA!
Before you drive away from the rental agency check the brake pads and tires :D . Three of the GT-H's were at Barber Motorsports Park for MCA's 30th Anniversary and logging some track time  .

This weekend looks gorgeous with sunny skies and upper 70's and lower 80's for high temps. Unfortunately next week the weather quickly goes downhill and by Lisa's arrival in South Haven expect highs only in the 50's! No forecast available for the 23-24 weekend yet. Sure hope it rebounds for the Cobra Nationals.

Question on the car show end....

Although I have been talking about this with the wife for four weeks she has made some other plans for the family sat night. I can be there all day on saturday but may have to leave about 5pm just after judging. Do you need to be present to win for the car show? It woud be no problem to come back on sunday if by chance I did win anything.

Thanks, Joe

Y'all need to think positive as it is way too early to tell what is going to happen. Our event should have been this weekend with perfect weather. It'll be changed back to the second week next year like it was in previous years.

Lumpy,

Excellent job! That's what we need...a little help from the local members. We're going to have to chat when I get up there so next year, our MI members are putting the event on and the Carolina people can come up and enjoy a stress free weekend. We have three four or five willing people, now we just need to channel that energy!

We're also bringing some prizes we saved from the Parkway show...detailer, sponges, and towels. My 94 is going to need a good cleaning when I get up there!

Thanks again!

GingerMan is just a few weeks away, and there seems to be an amazing lack of trash talk in here. Have we all become "mature"?
It is a little difficult to trash talk when the Cobra is still a pushmobile (broken cam chain at Barber) and only a 50/50 chance of being ready for GingerMan. Then again you can be pretty brave with the trash talk when you have the perfect excuse for not being able to back it up. So here goes. White Cobras are the fastest Cobras. They are much faster than red Cobras, especially red Cobras with those antique pushrods ;) .

Beezer,

If you enter the car show then the entire family gets in without any additional cost. If you enter the "on track" portion then the entire family gets in without extra cost. If you are coming to spectate and are not entering the show or driving on the track then there is a $10.00 gate fee per person.

If you are an SCMC member then all you have to do is show them your membership card to get in to the event at no charge.

As most of us know, titanium parts are the ultimate in go fast goodness. The pigment in white paint is titanium oxide. So you see, white cars ARE faster than red.

Red pigment often contains iron oxide. No further comment is necessary.

Black, being the absence of light is, of course, the fastest color of all.

What time are you going to head out to the track? I live on the west side of kalamazoo and can show you how to get out there if you would like. I am a stay-at- home dad (fancy name for a house husband) and if you need any help around town let me know.
Kalamazoo is about 45-50 min from the track. I'm thinking of heading out about 1pm just to take a look at the other club.

There is construction on I94 starting at exit 66 westbound one lane. I dont know where it start coming from the east bound.

About 60 cars plus instructors so around 75 total with about 10 racers! Having a really good time with a dry track and cloudy day. We had some rain but no torrential downpours till after 5:00 p.m. My phone got water in it so I couldn't call you back John! I'm hoping it will be dried out by tomorrow.

We had 14 cars registered for the car show even with the rain! I thought that was pretty good but I'll be requesting our normal track week for next year even if they have the NASA Nationals on the same weekend. They really did not affect our event at all!

Bummer I didnt have the CF card in the camera for race#2. Shooting photos... realized no film! Would have had awesome photos of the start...

Had a great time opentracking with SCMC club. Weather was drizzly/rainy all weekend, but track dried up enough to salvage a decent weekend.
Had a worn tire showing threads on left rear (looped it coming outta 3), so I put tire on right-rear (looped it again in #6). DOH! Never left the track, just pointed backwards, and got to watch ScottW laugh/waive as he went by. :o

Pitted right next door to Darkhorse Racing, with the "old school boys" from SAAC-MotorCityRegion (1986, 1989, 1990, 1991 Mustangs). Sleeping in the truck (cheap b*stard) got a wee bit chilly saturday night as it went into the 40's 'F with rain.

Favorite quote of weekend was Cindy commenting about Cliff's driving:
Cliff, you were going really fast... right up until the point where everyone else turned!!!:D Cliff went off DEEEEP into the sand on #3. Probably got that on video too, as I was right behind him. Have to digitize that too, so I can share... :p
