July 22, 2006 target date! Who'd be interested for a trip to Boone for a BBQ lunch and ice cream in town. Then we can go to Blowing Rock and run the Parkway over to Asheville for dinner?

It is fun to run through the tunnels with all of the loud exhaust!

If you would like to cruise up the parkway, post here and we'll start a list.

Participant List:

Mike H - 1998 BASF Extreme Cobra Convertible
Allan & Leah S - 2004 Redfire Cobra Coupe
Tony & Jacque S - 1994 "Indy Pace Car" Cobra Convertible or 04 Mystichrome
Robbie K - 2004 Competition Orange Cobra Coupe
Jason H - 2004 Competition Orange Cobra Coupe

Lisa & Clarence M - 1997 White Cobra Convertible
Greg P - 2003 Torch Red Cobra Coupe
Bill W - 2003 Torch Red Cobra Convertible

Details Below:

Here is what I am coming up with for this cruise:

1) Meet at MM 138 on I40 West (Rest Area) at 10:00 a.m. or Arby's in Hickory on Hwy 321 North at 10:30 a.m.
2) Rest area group will be traveling to Exit 123 (Hwy 321 North) toward Blowing Rock, NC.
3) There is a BBQ restaurant on the left at the top of the hill, that's where we'll eat lunch like we did the last time.
4) Some members can go to town for a little while (Blowing Rock) or
5) Some can go to the Blowing Rock itself.
6) We'll have a 2:30 p.m. meet time at the Viaduct on the Parkway. (Welcome center)
7) We'll regroup at the viaduct, count all of our chickens, and then head off across the Parkway just like we have before.
8) We'll get off the Parkway in Asheville, NC and eat at an agreed upon restaurant for dinner.
9) It is advisable to bring a two way radio and set it to channel 14 so we can still communicate with each other.

Note: We will make multiple stops along the way for necessities...food, drink, and rest room. You will not have cell phone coverage 100% of the time if you even have it. Do not get lost and if you do...be at the viaduct by 2:30 p.m.. If my cell works, you can call me at the club's business phone 803.371.0725.

I'm in! I did from Asheville to Mt. Mitchell last Saturday and it was a blast! I'll throw this idea out there........We could take hwy 221 from Blowing Rock until it intersects the Blue Ridge Parkway near Grandfather Mtn. As probably most of y'all know hwy 221 has many sharp curves and steep inclines which makes this a lot of fun to drive!:D
By the way Tony I have a few pics from last weekend.......but I don't have attachment priviledges for some reason. I guess I can post them in the pics/video section of the forum.

You should be able to post photos, they just have to be less than 200 kbs. I've changed your status so see if that helps?

We did the Parkway today from Mt. Airy to Roanoke, on the Hot Rod Power Tour.
A great day for it, not too hot, not too fast, hundreds of cars.

Crowds along the way in their lawn chairs, waving, allowing us to give some exhaust blasts for their pleasure.

Right there in Blowing Rock. We'll do like we did the other year and go up 321 to Blowing Rock the town then go to the actual park itself to go up on the rock. We'll have to set a meet time at the viaduct in case we get separated. There is no cell coverage up there, or at least there wasn't the year we went before. We'll then take the parkway over to Asheville, NC and eat supper for those that want to do the entire trip. I haven't decided yet but may do a overnighter in Asheville??

We had one of those sandwiches yesterday when we stopped in at Mount Airy on the way home from our mini vacation. I got my photo taken with me in the jail cell at the Mayberry Courthouse.

It was a fantastic sandwich and maybe we can plan a Mount Airy trip but I think we'll be doing all we can for the Blowing Rock trip. I said a stop in Boone but it will be hard pressed to do and I really meant Blowing Rock, the town and the actual park.

FYI, the Snappy Lunch hours are:

M,T,W, F - 5:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m.
Th, Sat - 5:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m.

It's only about 9 miles from Boone to Blowing Rock so it would be possible to start there if you wanted to.

Whichever you decide, let us know where you want to start/meet for certain and what time since it looks like we will be the only ones coming up 421.

Mike,

I think it would be easier if you told us what Saturdays you are off for the rest of the year and we can plan something on one of those days.

OTOH, you could go straight to Asheville and run the parkway backwards till you met us???? Then we can all just go out to dinner.

I never know how my saturdays will be. I already have Parkway Ford show inked off, but other than that, I have to dance around the rest of everyones work schedule. I will be deciding soon on whether to take off for the dragon run, or Lillington show, so those dates will be penned in, as well as fall Autofair.

It doesn't matter, I just like the BRP. It is a beautiful road to drive on. Just count me out. I don't see being able to run to Asheville in any decent amount of time, after getting up at 4am to work.

That's out of our (and John's) way to drive south to meet and then back up if the cruise is still starting around Boone. It would probably be easier to meet up with you in Boone/Blowing Rock, whichever you decide to have lunch at and start in. :firebounc

Going South to meet you and then having to turn around and go north on 321 would be out of the way. This would take 2 hrs (assuming light traffic and no sightseers on 321...good luck) and is 111 miles. 421 N to Boone is 78 miles and 1.25-1.5 hrs. Then add the mileage and time to cruise to Asheville for dinner plus another 2 hour drive back home and the extra 33 miles and time becomes relevant due to having two young children that will be riding in the back seat.

While my 04 is not a garage queen like a certain 04 mystichrome owner's is who will remain nameless :spoke: ;), the kid factor requires minimizing unnecessary car ride time whenever possible to keep them from complaining. So, yes, I was looking at going straight up 421 N to Boone. :)

Hey yall there is an Arbys restaurant on the right about 3 miles north of the interstate that has plenty of parking. It is right beside a fairly large Nissan dealership that would be a good meeting place. Alan for you probably picking up 421 would be the best way to get to Boone but for those in Charlotte it would definitely not be. So Tony if you want to meet at (Abry's restaurant) that would be a good place for a stop. And of course there is where I would meet you guys since I live right off of 321

After switching to the more accurate mapping software I have for my gps from the inaccurate microsoft s&t and looking at the route options again, we will meet up with the group at the rest area on I-40 (turns out the actual difference is only about 10 minutes, time easily made up on the run down 40 ;) ).

What type of food do y'all want for dinner? I will make reservations somewhere in Asheville for us if you'll let me know how many will be staying for dinner and what y'all want to eat.

Asheville has an eclectic dinning scene so just about any type of food is available. We even have a Hooters now!! ;) :D

We don't have to have a correct count for me to start looking around for a restaurant. I'll tell you it's hard to get a seat at ANY restaurant in Asheville on a Saturday night during the summer. The sooner we know what type of restaurant we want to eat at, the better we will be.

So are you saying Hooters is out??? It has decent food and alot of "EYE CANDY" especially the young ladies that work at the one in Asheville!!!  I still need a little more guidance on what type of food....

So the criteria so far are:

1) Good Food.
2) A room we can socialize in.

Well I went by both restaurants today and Bergermiesters is kinda small. The lot could handle us but we would just about take up the whole place with 20 to 30 people.

LaCaterina has a room that will hold 20 to 25. So I would like to know everyone's opion.

So far it's

2 for LaCaterina and 2 for Burgermeister.

Please let me know by tomorrow so I can call on Monday to make reservations at LaCaterina or we just drive up and take our chances at Burgermeisters.

Of course we can do Hooters, or one of the other chain restaurants that we wouldn't need reservations for just a long wait.

BTW Tony what time do you think we'll be getting to Asheville??

As for the restaurant Burgermiesters does NOT have a seperate room and I'm going over there RIGHT NOW to ask if they think they can handle a large, loud group of people on Saturday night around 6:00 PM. I know that the Italian Restaurant is more expensive but they do have a private room. It's getting late to make reservations so we may not be able to get a room. I'm gonig to check at another less expensive Italian place near my house that has a seperate room also. I'll post the info here later today.

Scattered T-Storms 78/62 60%

That means rain will be hit and miss all day. It's always like that on the Parkway during the summer. (Afternoon thunderstorms) Those that show up can go and those that do not show up don't have to go. It won't be the first time we ran into rain on the Parkway will it? Beats having 95 degree weather all day. I'll take the 78 degrees with the top down. If I have to stop and put it up then I will.

For those that are going.. bring a two way radio with you and set it to channel 14.

I want to thank everyone that came out to the cruise today! We had an awesome time didn't we? :) The rain held off all day and the only time it ever got torrential was when we got back to Charlotte where they were having a lightning storm with buckets of rain coming down. As for the cruise...I think the weather gods were with all fifteen Cobras and with the 28 us. We had two extra special treats today...first Bill Wyatt brought his 2007 Shelby GT 500 to the event. Yes it is a real 2007 model that had 200 miles on it when we got to the rest area. (I'm sure Allan can share some pics of the red with white stripe 2007 Cobra with us.) Second, Bill Altman brought out his 2005 GT 40, red with white stripes.

We had an awesome time all day long and having the rain hold off made it that much sweeter. We went through the traditional groups of people waving at us and a really cool sight was seeing a bunch of old Model A Fords coming in the opposite direction while we were on the Parkway. I didn't take a lot of pictures of cars, mostly people. After all, it's the people that make the club not the cars! ;)

I would have needed a ride (wasn't driving the Taurus up the moutain) and you never call me. What's wrong... got no love for me Robbie :(:(:(

This was the first time (after many, many attempts) that I got to see a real Ferrari and sit/ride in one. I was riding in the 348 Spider in the last pic... for a convertible it handles twisty roads like nothing I've ever been in. We went down 221 and came through there so fast I about got queasy from being slung through turns that fast... and that's something that never happens to me

I did hate not being able to go with the club here (would have like to saw the GT and the GT500) but I just didn't feel right not being able to drive my own car. We need to get together when I get my car done and hang out or something ;) Besides... I never have gotten to swim in your new pool :bounce:

Yes we big guys are at a distinct disadvantage when it comes to racing cars. Not only am I tall but I'm BIG (ok FAT) so I have two strikes against me! :D ;)
