View Full Version : Compression Tester Thread Adapter Question

SuperG

I borrowed a compression tester which I now discovered has an adapter screwed to the end of the hose. The adapter fits the spark plug threads way down in the deep, deep spark plug well.

And guess what? The hex head on the adapter is 18mm (I checked this later at the auto parts store). Do you know why I know this? Because it un-threaded from the compression hose and is now STUCK in the spark plug well. You wanna know what else? 18mm sockets DO NOT FIT down the spark plug well!

I hand tightened the hose into cylinder #5 and did a dry test, then removed it and added a little oil, then hand tightened the tester again and conducted the wet test.

Then I removed the tester and re-installed the spark plug and the plug tip bent while installing it...that's when I discovered the adapter to the compression hose stuck inside the spark plug well! I don't know why it is stuck in the threads and for the life of me I cannot get the adapter out. Who on God's green earth decided to use an 18mm hex head for a 5/8" spark plug hole!!????

After about a half hour of contemplating hari-kari, I have added locktite to the threads of the hose and am hoping that works. The first attempt was a failure, it's all soaking on PB Blaster now.

Anyone have any other ideas?

Thin wall 18mm deep socket???
Or grind the wall thinner on a regular 18mm deep...
Or find a thin wall deep that is a touch small and pound it on...(just make sure it clears the plug well walls first)
Or an extractor tool into the ID of the adapter...

Dry ice on the adapter???

Or if all else fails... pull the head off...

I'm thinking it's time for a rebuild any way by the amount of oil it was spewing...
I would not be surprised to find a couple broken rings and some damaged ring lands... hopefully the walls will clean up with a .010 over bore... maybe .020.

I am afraid that's what it may come to. You may have noticed I started another tread about removing the valve cover...most likely will go deeper...guess I better clear my work table for all the parts that are about to come off!

same happens to me a few times.

I just rethreaded the tube onto the adapter - tightenend harder and backed it back out .. then put the adapter in the vise and tightened the tube on so it wouldn't happen again.

My 18mm fit .. just need to find a thinner one.

I tried that...sucker is S-T-U-C-K!

And where did you find a thin walled 18mm? Sears didn't have one and the auto parts stores don't have them either...

You may be asking Sears for the wrong item. Try asking for an 18MM Spark Plug socket. They are usually thin wall and Sears list one of them.

Did you find a socket? I checked and I have an 18MM SP socket in my set. It looks pretty "thin walled" to me. I compared it to the 18MM regulator socket and it is slightly smaller in diameter.

Not yet, but ut occured to me there is still a hose stuck in there also, so a socket won't help...So I am ripping into the engine big time!

As I said, I never had a mod apart, just thinking out loud -- and probably all wet on my assumptions. Pushrods - that's a different story. I do know how to disassemble one of them. :) Hey, I even go back before pushrods. You know the ol' flatheads. You may have seen one in a museum one time. :D

Ha! Well, the mosquito fogger is a problem and I felt real uncomfortable when someone had to drive behind me...Besides, it's just leading up to something worse, so I better git her dun!

The valve cover should be able to come off with the compression tester still stuck in the head.

The hose connects to the fitting via a snap fitting just like a compressor line hose. if you can somehow slide the coupler, it should seperate.

Gary, what were the compression numbers on the cylinder you were able to test?

You need a valve job anyway man. :D Yank them heads.

193 psig dry/210 psig wet...what does that tell you? Whaa!

And the snap fitting is the gauge to the hose. I'll get that cover off, then the heads...Crowbar and a hammer!

355 gears..
a tune...

Not sure really... There are several reasons why Mach1s are as quick as they are...

3.55 gears and more power under the curve(low end) is a big part of it...

Your motor isn't hurt though... I think I would be targeting those dollars elsewhere...

I thought about cleaning up the 98 motor, keeping it stock and storing it for the future. Getting the 03 Mach1 motor and hammer on it and may be later installing a blower, do some 4:10 gears, etc. It may give me something to keep up with y'all and your terminators.

I will need a sponsor, anyone up for it, anyone, hello! lol :D

Yeah...my wallet is hurting. Then there's that voice inside that says, "You know, while the engine is out, you should also get..."

I haven't had my hands on the car since earlier in the week, I'll let you guys know what I get done over the (cold) weekend.

John Mihovetz called me last night...I immediately ordered the pair of stock Cobra tail lights! As soon as I get them, I will send a framed photo of them to Phil!

Then we talked engine rebuild (John does not do that anymore, BTW)...that was a lot of fun and I could immediately feel my wallet thin out! John was a lot of fun to talk with and he really tells it like it is. One thing that was immpressive was how many builders he knows around the country...of course, the names he dropped are the ones with good reputations. He told me he thinks 95% of the builders out there are bad people and it was hard not to argue that point especially after yesterday's story about a nearby shop from one of the guys Edmond and I work with...poor Tim!

So it was pretty cool and once the X-mas stuff is out of the way, I will begin tearing down the motor, remove it, and send it off to those kids at Triangle for the bottom end work.

I had to get a set of GT taillights cuz I couldn't afford $200+ for stock Cobra replacements. (but I added the FLAMEs to them cuz there was too much RED for my taste) LOL

What was the cost of the replacements? Cuz I miss my Amber / Yellow turn signal!

Tim, he sold each to me for $50, so $100 for the pair, including shipping. I have been looking and looking for a pair when Jimmy put up his post with John's ad from another board...
