View Full Version : Looking at an '01 Cobra this weekend in San Antonio

Hello everyone,

I have a few questions about buying a 2001 Cobra that I found on Autotrader. It's pretty much exactly what I'm looking for...5 speed, mineral gray, etc. I'm wondering about anything I need to look for specifically that is a trouble spot on these cars. I cut my teeth on an IROC Z and an LT1 Z28 Camaro, so I'm no n00b to mechanics. Just looking for some general guidance. The one thing that concerns me is the price. The kid is asking $15,800, and KBB puts an excellent car at a little over 14K. Its got 45K miles on it, and from the pics, looks to be in great shape. I searched the site for a buying FAQ and couldn't find it, so please if this post is not appropriate, point me to the info. I'm really hoping this car works out and I get to join your group.

On the price:
Edmunds shows 14,600 for private party sale and 16,300 for dealer sale (assuming a coupe in 'outstanding' condition). 'Clean' condition knocks about $1000 off those prices. Edmunds is nice because you can put in the zip and it will do price quote adjustments based on the local market. But remember that those are just best estimates, and nobody in their right mind prices a car at what they will actually be willing to sell it for. What he can actually sell the car for will depend on supply/demand. If you like the car, and are willing to go back for it later, offer him what you consider a 'reasonable' price (be prepared to negotiate) and be prepared to walk away. If you offer is the best one he gets, then he may call you back.

What to look for? The only issue I can remember with the '01s is the 'ping' problem some of them had. I think the fix was a re-programmed ECU. Personally, unless you are familiar with the car and the owner it is a very good idea to have a good mechanic and body guy give the car a thorough inspection. No telling what kind of abuse a sports car has had, and I wouldn't pay top dollar for a car with hidden issues.

Carfax ran clean, I'm going over there tomorrow morning to check it out. If I like it, I'm going to make an offer contingent that it passes inspection at the local SVT dealer (body and mech).

I'm pretty close to converting from the bowtie to the oval.

Checked it out, everything was square, took it to the dealer, checked out there too.....so I picked it up for $15,400. See you guys on the road!

Here is one fuzzy pic....been battling rain in San Antonio, so I shined the wheels and snapped this:

After driving the car for a week, I can say that it's much burlier and heart-racing quick than my bolt-on '94 Z28. It's also WAY more refined, way more mature, and much easier to handle. I'm a converted Mustang guy from here on out. The best part was getting my new parking sticker at work, the guard asked year/make/model and when I told him it was a Cobra he perked up and said, "Really?", so I took him outside for a quick tour.

Where do the San Antonio/Hill Country Mustangers meet up?

GREAT CAR!!!

They have been over shadowed by Terminators for a while now, perhaps undeservedly so... but I think you will fall in love with that car... in a very short period of time!!

They have a nice feel.. even when driven VERY HARD!!
