What is the actual purpose of the hood blanket? I have seen some people take them off, why is this?

From what I know, the hood blanket is supposed to help suppress a fire in the engine bay (if there ever was one)...mine got torn up when I broke my first belt and i never put a new one back on.

I was doing some reading this afternoon and I have heard all kinds of things on what it is supposed to do. I think I am going to take mine off and paint the bottom of it. Thanks guys for the help

I took mine off and got my underhood painted because the blanket got to be in bad shape. Since I wanted to get more air into the engine bay I also cut the flap on the hood vents. I think it looks better what do you think??

looks great Robbie. I am going to take mine off this winter and paint the underside. Mines not in bad shape at all, I just dont think I want it on there anymore.

people have been taking them off for years and have had no problems. I have had mine off since the 1st of the year but I painted the underside of mine with a sound deadener.

The purpose of the blanket is to put out a fire in case you have a fuel leak in the engine compartment and it ignites. :D

Ford engineering will tell you that it's mainly for sound suppression. Secondary is the fire protection. It will have no effect on your paint if you take it off.

I'm hoping to do the same this winter as $$ allows. Slow times in the lumber industry right now.

You can pull it off, be carefull with the push pins, then after you have it off you can inspect the underside of hood for paint and condition. I noticed you have oxford white, mine is as well, and hood underside was in good shape. Leave it off and put the push pins back in their respective holes. Cost zero, then when funds allow think about touch-up or refinish and painting... :D

I personally got some smaller ones from the auto parts store to fill some of the holes

I've looked under my blanket, and my underside isn't finished. Actually it looks like crap. That's why I'm just going to waite until I can do the whole thing before I pull it off.

As for the smaller push pins, I've done that already with the holes that don't have any push pins, it cleans it up a little for sure.

Unless you snap a blower belt and it whips up and nails the underside of the hood!

That happend to me, cracked the paint on top of the hood!!!
