Hey everyone! I am now test driving a 97 Cobra and I love it! I have had lots of Mustang GT's from 84-91 and a 94 GT and a 00 GT. I just came accross a white 97 Cobra from a dealer where I buy most of my cars from. It has kinda high miles but it is a one owner car (as so the carfax says). Any "need to know stuff" on these cars? I know when I first drove it I was shaking when I got out of it! lol.. :D It is a FUN car!

StangCrazy,

Congrats on your new purchase. I am sure you will enjoy the Snake a lot especially if it hasn't been modded yet. Tons of horsepower waiting to be unleashed! Hope you enjoy owning it and be sure to come out to our TN events next year as you don't live too far from K-town!

I hope you buy it. Congrates if you already did. :D

This website has a wealth of information and really nice people to help you out. All of them own or have owned Cobras so their insight is really vehicle specific. ;)

Welcome aboard.

Welcome to the boards!! I am also a fairly recent first time owner of a Cobra and I have found this club to be great in both its knowledge and camaraderie!

I have decided to buy it on Monday. It does need to be painted and no pics yet, I will take some today. What mods can be done to add more power on these? I have found that it has a pro m mass air meter, caster camber plates, 3:73 or 4:10 gears (maybe because the speedo is off) high flow catted X-pipe, and Bassani mufflers... that is all of the mods. It shows I am going about 100mph at 3000rpm on the interstate and traffic is still passing me?? Gotta fix that..

;)

You first need to find out what gears you got in there...

I am going to have it painted solid white since the stipes do not look so good. Someone put silver stripes on top of blue stripes that were on the car before..:(

Any info on what mods I can do next? (besides supercharger or turbo)

It has a high flow catted X-pipe, Bassani mufflers, (which I am going to change to H-pipe and Flowmasters), pro-m mass air meter, a K&N filter, caster camber plates, and a short throw shifter...

Nice looking cobra.

Fixing the speedo is easy. There are a few ways the cheapest is get a Speedcal from Dallasmustang.com. Its a fairly easy install. You set the Speedcal to the gear size and it will fix your speedo. :D

nice looking Cobra. I prefer the tone of the bassani on the 97 Cobras over the flowmasters.

Bassini is the best on any Snake. IMO.

Beautiful car. The silver striping is a different, and nice take, on the Body Style.

Yea, I think I will keep the Bassani's now that I have had the car a while I like it. I would like to get some headers and a nice Cold Air Intake next...

Thank you, but.. if you seen the stripes up close it is faded bad and they are coming off. The paint has alot of cracks on top and big chips on the sides that I have covered up somewhat with touch up paint.
Right now I am getting some quotes on a total paint job for it. If you or anyone knows a good place under $1000 hopefully to get a decent paint job let me know.

Here in Texas of course... ;-)

for CAI, there are several good ones. I own a Western Motorsports one. On their website, they list a upper piece, lower piece, and a bigger MAF. You are not supercharged, so you wouldn't need the bigger MAF. I am running just the upper, and lower, with the stock MAF. here is a picture of mine

JLT makes a great CAI, however, on the 96-97 Cobra, you would have to remove the strut tower brace. Some say it is not that big of a deal, but I didn't want to remove mine, so I went with the WMS CAI.

Stay away from BBK, they hold a lot of heat from your motor, not good. Stay away from the chrome ones.

Perhaps keeping the stripes when you get it painted may be a consideration. No more fading and cracking issues after that. I like them since they add dimension to the car; - especially on a non-metallic paint.

Paint jobs under 1k may be difficult to come by and they quality you may receive may be compromised.

There is a shop here in Houston West area - MPH - Mike Clifton does a good job for competing pricing. Not sure if he can keep the price that low. Seek out others in the community who recently had paint done and find out where they went. Word of mouth is best. I had paint work done by Champion FOrd and Joe Myers Ford here in Houston, lower than Market rates, but not by much. Albeit the work done was exceptional though.

Congrats on your purchase!

I would probably run, not walk, run from anyone who offered to paint my car for under $1,000.00. You want it to look good when it is finished. Prep work is essential as well as the finish work. A lot of the cheaper places skimp on the prep work. Even if it means having to delay painting it, you will be much happier choosing a paint shop based on the quality of their work instead of price. Every time I've seen a car that has had a cheap paint job it looked the part. Everything from overspray, to paint runs, trash in the paint, inconsistent color, bad overlaps, missed spots, etc.

Are you planning to put on another stirpe? If not, be aware that you may have future paint problems where the stripe was. The adhesive from the stipes will cause paint problems even if the finish is removed down to bare metal as the adhesive penetrates the metal over time.

Hopefully some of our Texas members can provide you with some good places to get your painting done. Some of them are shy when it comes to posting in other forums on the board though so you may have to ask down in the TX region forum. :)
