View Full Version : When was the first 94 Cobra built?

I've searched around here but couldn't find any info so I thought I'd start a thread. My brother has a mildly wrecked 94 Cobra that has been sitting for many years. I'm trying to inspire him to get off his butt and fix it. He has a new wife who doesn't like it and he says he'll fix it "someday".

When did the production for 94 Cobras begin? Was it something like August 93 or was it later? Here are a few pics from this past Thanksgiving. If he does decide to sell it, and I can't get it first $$$, I've promised the guys at SVTOANashville first dibs.

I couldn't get to the door sticker as it is parked against the wall and the door was locked. I also couldn't read the VIN plate as it was too dark and there was a shadow on the windshield.

I know, I know!!!! 1993, and only came in red, black and teal. 1993 was the first year not 1994. Also NO convertible was ever built for that year.

Yes I know about the 93 Cobras, both the regular production and the R Models. What I need to know is when the first 94 Cobra was built since that is what my brother owns.

I know that regular production for Mustangs usually starts in August of the previous model year as a general rule. I just don't know if Cobra production started that early or if it took Ford a couple of months to gear up for the Cobras. Where the 94s have the V6 rear bumper cover I'm guessing they had some vendor supply issues for the Cobra specific components? Maybe it was compounded since it was the change over to SN-95 production I would expect there were some delays?

1994 Mustang Cobras were built in the beginning of 1994 on March the 4th. There were 5009 Coupes built and 1000 Convertibles. All of the Convertibles were "Pace Car" replicas and are all red with a tan top and interior. The convertibles were produced first because Ford wanted them to hit the dealerships ASAP. The Coupes then followed. My Convertible is number 22 and it has some parts that were left over from the 1993 model year. For example, the rubber distributor cover is a 1993 type vs the 94 type being a plastic cover.
It also has Mustang GT brake pads and rotors which are not on the later models because the Cobras are known to have vented discs on the rear. My Pace Car does not have vented discs so this has to be due to a shortage of parts available. HTH

Thanks that is exactly what I needed to know.

If I can ever get to the door tag to see the build date I'll know if it is an early build or what. I'll use this info to hopefully get him inspired and to at least clean all the crud out from around it. It looks pretty sad buried under all that stuff.

The accident blew both airbags and I've already helped / purchased for him the correct tan Cobra bags.

its always a shame to see a snake sit. From your pics it doesnt look bad at all, and he should fix it or at least sell it to someone who WILL put it back on the street.

Is there a way to get build info on my 95 cobra with just the VIN? I have the title but don't want to change it to my name as the car is going to be a track only car and I don't want to pay the state the taxes based upon "presumptive value" which is much higher than I paid for it so I don't know how to find out the build number info.

Call 1.800.FORD.SVT and they can give you that information over the phone. You will need to give them your VIN number.
