 The left half shaft has a ripped boot. The right side seal is leaking and throwing fluid everywhere. No boot kits seen. The seal kit is available. The half shafts are not available from napa. Ford has them for $546 each. I understand the next step up in strength is around eight hundred bucks for pair of half shafts but then the gears and diff. have to be replaced too(28 to 31 spline). The straight axle from ford is around nine hundred. Any suggestions to do this w/o spending so much?

yeah the easiest thing, is to find a solid axle from any 94+ mustang. The 99+ are actually a touch wider but you can run the 94+ with 0 problems. You can usually get them for around $200-$300 complete. You can then take your differential setup and put in it, or you can order an 03/04 differential pick the gear you want and get a set of 31spline mosers and never worry about breaking it.

Repairing an irs is throwing money in the wind unless you can just find one together and in good shape. Else you could take the same amount of money <around $1k> and have a damn near bullet proof solid axle.

Now keep in mind you will have to change tail pipes going to a solid axle and may want to get some good control arms to.

Food for thought

Per your vehicle info you have a 2001. 2001 used the 31 spline - not the 28. 28 was only in the 99.
