View Full Version : Traction Lok Differential for a 98 Cobra mustang.

I had the bearings go bad in the differential. So I got the rebuild kit and replaced all the bearings. The 2 diff. and the 2 pinion bearings. I have it all back together and have a problem. The s springs that press against the spider gears pop out when you turn the shafts forward(counter clockwise). I'm not sure whats binding up here and popping them out. If I have the 2 axles out the differential spins freely both ways or so to speak the ring and pinion spin smooth. I never tore apart the differential itself so the spider gears were never removed. I did how ever had to pop out one of the s springs to get the c-clips out to remove the axles. I'm leaning to not getting the springs not in all the way but from what I can tell they look alright. Anyone have any experience working with these, I'm kinda at a loss here and can't figure it out. Thanks for any feedback regarding this.

I had a broken s-clip that I replaced when changing to 4:10 gears. The trick is to use locking needle nose pliars to squeeze the s-clip down enough to wedge it between the spider gears. Then tap in to place with a aluminium dowl and rubber hammer. Good luck it took me a few tries!
