Whats the best sounding exhaust on the market today assuming you had an O/R mid pipe with standard length headers?

Put a Bassani X pipe and Borla Stingers on mine after hearing a Cobra with that setup on a video, and it usually gets quite a bit of attention.

On my refurbished white '96 Cobra, I have Bassani mid-length, ceramic-coated headers into a Bassani high-flow, catted X-pipe (removable cats), then to a mandrel-bent, one-off stainless cat-back that includes Flowmaster dual-chamber mufflers and Magnaflow bologna-cut, stainless steel tips. It sounds great, and people often comment about how much they like the sound of the car.

To be honest, however, if I were to do it all over again, I wouldn't get the Bassani mid-length headers. They are hand-bent individual tubes that merge into a press-fit collector, and they are bent to fairly loose tolerances. Both times they were removed to have head work done, the mechanics cussed the day that these individual-tube assemblies were invented. I had to get a replacement tube because one of the tubes rubbed against the transmission housing and vibrated/chattered to beat the Dickens, not to mention the heat that it radiated through the transmission housing. The one-piece mid-length coated headers are a better call for the '96-'98 Cobras, mostly because of the one-piece transmission/bell-housing assembly on these cars and the clearance issues that this causes.

Another issue with the Bassani headers is especially relevant for those who have lowered cars: Since the collectors of the Bassani headers are essentially glued-on with a very light layer of high-temp RTV sealant, they are prone to getting knocked loose when the car bottoms-out on speed bumps. My car has been lowered 1.5 inches, and I now have a "Check Engine" light (Code P0133) due to an unfortunate encounter with a nasty speed bump at St. Pete Beach.

Just wondering but why is borla not one of the options on the poll?

on my car right now there is an offroad xpipe (not sure on brand, came with the car) and I have borla xr-1s on the stock pipes. I always have people tell me my car sounds good. and i think it sounds amazing.

also i have the stock h-pipe and im selling it if anyone needs it.

And in 3 or 4 weeks when i have time i am putting on my new flowtech longtube headers with offroad x-pipe. I bought them just because someone was selling all of that for cheap. so I will see how they sound with the xr-1s. eventually im gonna get a whole 2.5 piped mandrel bent borla xr-1 catback. or maybe stingers.

Borla no longer offers a catback for the 96-98 Cobras

I personally like the Bassani Mufflers. I'm running BBK L/T, Mac X-Pipe, with the sweet sounds of Bassanis. Had the SLP Loudmouth before and didn't like it. Reminded me of Cherry Bombs.

I like the sound of Flowmaster dual-chamber mufflers married to a Bassani catted x-pipe..It's that familiar Cobra growl.

If you have a '96-'98 Cobra, however, I would use the Bassani catted x-pipe but stay away from the Bassani headers: They are mandrel-bent--one tube at at a time, they sometimes are bent out-of-tolerance, and they thus present pain-in-the-arse clearance problems around the transmission. This happens because the bell-housing and transmission are one unit on the '96-'98 Cobra. Kooks Long-Tube (http://www.nmradigital.com/forums/showthread.php?t=99893) headers are the best choice, I think. They certainly cost the most. :D

cheers,
