Modular simply refers to the same basic engine architecture for all Ford V8 engine applications. All of the modular V8's share a 3.552-inch cylinder bore. All of the 4.6 liter engines use a 3.543 inch crankshaft stroke. The 5.4 liter V8 engines get their increased displacement from a longer 4.16-inch stroke. The Triton V10 is a 5.4 liter V8 with two additional cylinders. Since the engines share many dimensions, they also share many parts. See the article "Modular Mix & Match" in the February, 2003, issue of MUSCLE MUSTANGS & FAST FORDS. All modular engines are overhead cam, either SOHC OR DOHC.
