Can I take the black plastic cheese grater looking things out of my hood easily? Is it a bad thing to remove? Will the water get in and hurt my engine? Will I benefit from the added air flow?

Not sure how difficult to remove, they pretty much clip in. There is practically zero airflow there, so no...there will be no benefits. Oh...not only is there very little (almost zero) airflow hitting that area but there is no hole in the hood either. You could cut holes in your hood and hood-liner but again, no air would flow in to cool your engine.

how could there be no air hitting that area? do you have a wind tunnel of the car?

Sorry, no I don't. But it's been proven by others that you have little to no air hitting the nostrils because of the overall design of the car's front end/hood.

Pop them out, cut holes in your hood and hood-liner if you want, it's your car. You won't gain anything from it but you can still do it if you want.
