Where does the clutch engage with respect to pedal position when the clutch is worn out? In other words, as the clutch gets close to failing from wear, will it engage closer and closer to the floor or closer and closer to the top?

My '97 has 66k on the original clutch and it engages very close to the top. I've lifted the pedal to adjust the clutch, but I don't notice much difference.

I have the time to replace the clutch this winter if it is on its way out. I'm not getting any vibration or grinding noises. How can I tell how much life I've got left on the clutch?

Not sure if your clutch is failing or your or your clutch quadrant is failing. It's a plastic piece and it will wear out. You may want to look into getting one of the adjustable clutch quadrants from Steeda or such before replacing your clutch.
