View Full Version : How to remove crank bolt up front?

My '94 Cobra's harmonic balancer recently broke off, and I need to get the center crankshaft bolt off. How do you keep the crank from turning while you try and unbolt it? Without taking the tranny off to somehow jam the flywheel...

Thank you for your help!

I put the tranny in 4th gear and use a cheater bar to break it loose. Putting the tranny in gear and the E brake on will keep the car from rolling and hold the motor enought to break it loose. It worked for me.

Good luck, those bolts are on there really tight and sometimes a impact will not get it off.

On mine, I just used a long breaker bar with a deep well socket. Put the socket on the bolt and lay the handle of the breaker bar against the AC pulley. While you hold the bar in place have someone just bump the starter. It will Loosen the bolt.

*CAUTION* Disable ignition so engine will not start. *CAUTION*
*CAUTION* Watch placement of fingers while holding bar in place. *CAUTION*

Yup, that's what I did, and it came out o.k.!

Thanks!

Now, if I can only use the puller correctly I'll get somewhere!
