Hey guys, I'm new to the site, but i've been lurking for a few days, absorbing information and such, and I've got a question for you all:

In a short timeframe I'll be buying a 99-01 Cobra, and I was wondering if you guys knew of any weak points to look for, trouble signs, things to keep in mind while looking a prospective car over.. basically any pointers you guys may have gotten over the years from firsthand exp. with these great cars.

Any tips/pointers you may have woiuld be greatly appreciated!

Thanks guys!

Grinding going into gears, popping out of gear, stuff like that. Seems to be a big one with mustangs. Also, if it's hard to put into reverse........ that's normal.

Thanks for the info Josh, i'll definetly keep than in mind on test drives. Any other pointers guys? or is the 5mt the primary sore point for GTs/Cobras ?

Regarding general information on recalls, warranty work and
Ford known problems go to www.alldata.com you can enter
the vehicle type and year. This website will list all the Ford
service bulletins and recalls.

As for other problems, I have a slight air noise problem from the
driver side window seal. No other problems to speak of on
my '01 coupe.

Good Luck !

I have a '99 vert and it is the best car I have had. I bought it in Oct of '02. I have put 20k miles on it and have loved every one. I would not even look at a GT. This is the first vert I have owned and highly recomend getting a vert given the right climate and use. The dragsters will say get a hard top.
My thoughts, and you get what you pay for.

Biggest thing with the '99s were the clunk and the vibration (also the horsepower issue, but SVT can tell you if that was addressed by the VIN).

Biggest thing with the '01s was the pinging issue. Basically with 92-93 octane gas some of them were pinging under load. Most reported that the problem got worse with time until it occured under light loads in cold weather as well.

On the "hard to get into reverse", its normal in the 99s but not the 01s. The 01s got a new tranny that has synchros for reverse, while the 99s lacked those synchros. Your best bet is to do searches on all the boards to find the issues people had. Hard shifting while cold is "normal" in the 01s. Living in Houston I don't notice it until I am parked outisde on a cold evening for a while. It improves as the car warms up.

I had a creaking noise in mine - passenger seat rear - (heard of some other 01's as well) due to incomplete/missing welds. Easily fixed once they found the problem.

Early '01s still had the T-45.
I believe in Feb. they started putting in the 3650 tranny.

The biggest thing between the 2 years there is, you're gonna want to make sure "the fix" recall was completed on the '99.

Actually I think you are referring to the Gt's, Tim. I believe all Cobra's got the 3550.
