Are you TIG or MIG welding your cages? I find nothing in any rule books (I think NHRA cages with chrome moly have to be TIGed). Everyone else just says "Arc" welded......:doubt:

I've MIG welded all my past cages, but I think most of my future cages will be TIG welded. Not because it's any better than MIG, I just like the way the welds look and I feel like it has a little more control than the MIG. I'll still use the MIG for things like SFC's because of the larger gaps that need to be filled.

I don't know of any rules that say the cage must be either TIG or MIG. NASCAR even MIG's their's because of the speed requirement of fabrication for their cars.

Tom, I hate to say this but if you beleive this:

Not because it's any better than MIG

you need to go back and read more welding books....

You misunderstood me...

What I meant was that it is not the reason I am partial to TIG over MIG. I stated my reasons for TIG preference which is NOT because of the quality of the weld. MIG is a perfectly acceptable method of welding for roll cages except for when using chrome moly.

John, first i'll grade your post:

I really need to hear this

you should hang your head in shame........

second, you should know by now that I rarely answer questions. I simply pose them. To quote a famous movie "I know nothing, I am merely the messanger."

anyone have a chicken suit?

John, I think you and I both know Mr. Tone well enough to know that it'll be a year before you ever get an answer out of him. It's probably a Ford trade secret or something.

By the way, you can safely weld a 4130 ChroMoly cage with a MIG machine......

Is that good enough?

I know you can. There are people out there that are doing it. But my limited knowledge of it says that the TIG creates a smaller heat affected zone which is better for heat treating after the weld.

And that doesn't even come close to answering John's question...

What's john's question?

John, by the way did you ever come up with those numbers I wanted from you?

All depends on how much beer I've had and if there's a source of ignition nearby.

I hear Bryan just got a sphincter torch to weld with and he wants to show everyone. Supposed to be the latest welding technology with the biggest, brightest flame. He also said something about raoting marshmellows for the whole crowd at CMP. Isn't that nice of him?
