Is there any easy way to tell what gears I have? I have a 2001 cobra and I can't keep the back tires from spinning in first. I do know I am taching 2K rpm's going 20 mph in first and 35 mpr at 2k rpm's in second. Can anyone help. Thanks, Chris

Chris,

If you lift the car off the ground and mark the driveshaft then you can see how many times the shaft turns for every one revolution of the tire. That will give you an idea of what type gears you have. Stock 01 Cobras came with a 3.27:1 ratio.

Tony

If you do this then you may not be able to tell. :rotf:

Like Tony said, 01's came stock with 3.27's

.........but the scenarios you give are from a 2.19-2.26 rear gear ratio  which is not likely, unless you changed your overall tire diameter

a better way is, what RPM are you at when driving 70mph in 5th gear ??

I will check today on my way to work. If I have the 3.27 I do not see how you keep the tires hooked up and keep the wheels from hopping.

If you cannot take off from idle without spinning your tires then your car has a serious issue. I drove my 99 Coupe for 5 years and never had a problem. Now, if I wanted to spin that was a different story. I suggest you leave the traction control in the "on" position to help aid in traction.

at 70 mph I am going right a 2,000 rpms. Does that help?

at 70 mph I am going right a 2,000 rpms. Does that help? I'm assuming you are in 5th gear @ 70 mph and 2,000 rpms.

You have the stock 3.27 gears.

It is not that the tires spin it is when I am already running in first and then nail it. The rear end jumps and shakes and then does not hook up. I think it is the IRS thing.

yep, that is the infamous wheel hop. You can do several things to minimize or virtualy do away with it

You can
get higher rate springs
get higher dampening shocks
get the 03 Cobra or similar IRS brace
get upper and lower control arm urethane bushings
get differential urethane bushings
get IRS urethane bushings
get a toren T-2R differetial

In that order those things can eliminate wheel hop, as you work down that list, at any point wheel hop can be minimized enough to your liking. The power your car makes is also a factor.

Wheel hop is NOT a good thing. It weakens the halfshafts, and if you do it somewhere with extrememe conditions (drag strip where the surface causes more stress during hop) you can possibly snap a halfshaft.

Where can I get the brace besides from a cobra. How good would it be to just add the brace. What are the preferred springs and shocks. I could probably put the brace on that is why I would start with that. The springs and shocks I would have to have someone do it. Any help would be great. Thanks

You can get the '03 brace from Torrie at:

http://www.fordpartsnetwork.com/

or try Pauls High Performance brace at:

yep, fordpartsnetwork is the cheapeset place to get the 03 brace.

As far as spring and shocks, I am partial to H&R springs and Bilstein shocks.

Both can be found and researched here:

Springs (http://www.maximummotorsports.com/HRsprings.asp)

Shocks (http://www.maximummotorsports.com/bilstein.asp)

will the brace alone do much or do I need the shocks and springs to have it do anything?

easier way of checking your rear gear ratio:

drive the car at 70 mph in fourth gear...whatever rpms you're at is the gear you're running...

ie 4th at 70mph with stock 3.27's:3270 rpms
4th at 70 with 4.10's:4100rpms...

easier than lifting the car up anyway

They all work in conjunction so each does a little to help

The best way to get rid of wheel hop is stuff a solid axle in that beast. :)
