The Last Roundup: Ford corrals all its ponies in one last 601-hp Mustang

With more than a year to go until Fordís Special Vehicle Team completes work on the next SVT Cobra (an í07 model due in í06), SVT and Ford Racing Performance Parts offer catalog suggestions for those who canít wait for the í07 SVT Cobra.

Starting with the current SVT Cobra (in this case an í03 model) with a base price of $33,125, the Ford Racing/SVT partners propose adding nearly $14,000 worth of parts highlighted by a twin-screw supercharger, SVT Cobra R suspension mods and brake kit, and 18-inch chrome wheels.

Whatís the sum of all these parts? Try 601 hp and 529 lb-ft of torque from an engine rated at 390 hp and 390 lb-ft in a garden-variety SVT Cobra. Ford folks say their tuner íStang is good for a 3.9-second 0-60 mph run, and an 11.9-second quarter-mile.

The best news is this beastís road manners. Despite inoperative traction control (it would go crazy trying to manage all that power) and an exhaust report that will set off every car alarm in the parking garage, the modifications make this monster a reasonable everyday driveróespecially for the everyday driver who likes a car that can burn rubber in three out of six gears.

Jointly developed by Ford Special Vehicle Team (SVT) and Ford Racing Performance Parts (FRPP), this SVT Mustang Cobra project car showcases bolt-on performance modifications that are readily available in the FRPP catalog and from other aftermarket suppliers. With an estimated 690 horsepower, this modified SVT Cobra is the perfect remedy for performance enthusiasts who feel the stock 390 horsepower Cobra is simply "adequate."

Yea, me and dad were talking about it last night and decided that was a whole lot of money...and that we could probably do it cheaper.
