Coolant Crossover Mod?
 

I have a friend who is installing an 03 Cobra engine & tranny combo into a Factory Five roadster. He has read and has pix of the coolant mod that goes from head to head at the back of the engine. My question is where do we buy the parts? They are no where to be found in any parts catalog or TSB from Ford. I assume they are aftermarket. I would read that thread carefully before ordering. Appears to have had some issues. That thread has also been dead for a while so he may have worked out the problems with it.

The LDC unit that he is talking about was on at least two forums, SVTP and Mod Fords without any issues or complaints posted by those that bought it. It is also supposed to be a direct install, from what I see on the other one it requires some modifications and more connections equals a greater chance of leaks.

But, like I said, I have no experience with them and my opinions are based solely on pictures of both products and what I have read about them.

I have the evenflow in my (sold) '03 and had no issues...apparently an easy install, especially when the engine is out!

I have the LDC Cooling Mod on my 03 Cobra and it was a good quality mod, but you did have to remove the tranny. The reason you can't find it anymore is because the guy who made them is no longer in business and the shops that bought all of what he had left have raised the price greatly. I thinik I purchased mine for about $125 and I have seen it now at twice the price. The evenflow mod routes the coolant in a different way and you have to cut into the upper radiator hose. A buddy of mine recently used this idea, but actually used a few better quality parts. As I have relocated my thermostat to the top hose, I could not use the Evenflow mod if I was still looking. Is the LDC mod worth the extra price now ... not really sure. Is the Evenflow a good idea ... yes, it works, but you do have to remove the blower and some of the parts are lower quality. It just depends upon the parts you want to use.

Head cooling mods are a waste of time and money. If it gives you piece of mind then go for it I guess. Plenty of people have burnt up pistons or developed head tick with them. If you don't do any high speed, WOT pulls in the 2 overdrive gears you should be fine.

The only good head cooling mod IMHO is the January 2005 heads. A HCM is not going to keep you from burning up pistons in high speed, WOT, 5th and 6th gear pulls as that puts a heavy, sustained load on the motor, and creates alot of heat. The factory pistons aren't bad pistons in and of themselves, but they don't have alot of clearance, and were designed for 8 psi which doesn't create as much heat as cars running more boost.

If I was in a situation where I felt like I needed to worry about fixing the cooling system on a Terminator I would fix it by building a good bottomend with better pistons designed to survive in that environment, and add some Jan 05 heads.
