Popping Noise from Rear End....

I made a trip to Kansas a couple weeks ago in the Cobra. One the way back, I started hearing a popping noise from the rear end area. At first I thought it was something in the trunk moving around when I would make a turn. It pops when you turn sharply or making a curve. This is not the normal clank I have from ring and pinion clearance. I jacked up the Cobra and inspected everything in the rear end area. Everything was tight and looked fine. I can't move anything in the upper/lower control arms, swap bar or IRS assembly attaching to the body. The only place there is any movement is at the rear end axle spool. There is no play side to side in the driveshaft out to the wheel area past the inner CV joint. However, I can move the axle coming out of the third member at the inner CV joint. I can move side to side about an 1/8" to 3/16" and there is a popping clank. I can't tell if the axle is moving side to side when load is applied when turning while going down the road. This has pretty much stumped me.. With only 52,000 miles, I can't believe a CV is going out.. but maybe wrong... This popping is very obvious and noticeable with windows up at slow speed while making a turn. It only does it when you change directions of turn. Another words, it does not do it going down the road. I don't know if anyone else has experienced this or just me. Any ideas??
thanks....

you need to jack up your car in the rear and pull your wheels straight out and then back in.you should not have any in and out movement.then try the up and down direction and also rotate your wheels and listen for any unusual grinding noise.sometimes its the bearings and sometimes,as in my case, your spindle nut may have not been torqued properly and theres freeplay causing the problem.of course theres many other possibilities but start with the easy stuff
