Street Racing Accident

Guys and Gals. Just wanted to let everyone see this link. The reason I am posting it is because it happened right here in my hometown and has been a popular cruising spot for many years now. I know I have had my share of street races before but it really makes you stop and think about it. This happened last night here. If you are going to street race just be safe about it and away from people.

Car plows into crowd in Gastonia

5 hurt as drag-racing car crashes into line

GASTONIA - A drag-racing car plowed into a crowd of people waiting in line for ice cream in downtown Gastonia on Monday night, throwing people as far as 20 feet and knocking some of them out of their shoes.

Five people were injured, at least one of them seriously.

As of early this morning, Gastonia police were still looking for the two drivers who had been racing down the popular main drag, Sgt. Jeff Clark said. The driver of the car that crashed outside the Dairy Queen ran from the scene. The other, a driver of a green Mitsubishi Eclipse, drove off.

The late model Chevrolet Camaro crashed at 9:22 p.m. in the parking lot of the Dairy Queen at East Franklin Boulevard and Church Street, according to Gaston County emergency dispatchers.

"It honestly sounded like a video game," said Ashley Bradshaw, 19, who works at the Dairy Queen but was next door on a bench outside Ink Link Tattoos when the wreck occurred.

"When he hit that telephone pole, I felt it."

The force of the wreck knocked down a utility pole, sending a power line across Franklin Street, said Tommy Cleary, a Gaston County Emergency Medical Services supervisor.

Witnesses described it as breaking like a toothpick.

The Camaro crashed into a parked Ford Explorer, injuring a woman in the driver's seat, Cleary said. It also plowed into four people standing in line.

Leigh Anne Bradley, a 19-year-old Dairy Queen employee, was serving customers when the car struck the group of people in front of her.

She said the car was speeding when it hit a power pole, spun around and hit four or five people. People lay on the curb screaming, including some children who screamed for their parents, she said.

Bradley said she and other employees put ice on victims' injuries and comforted them while they waited for paramedics.

Meanwhile, Bradshaw and two friends rushed into the parking lot and saw the blood. Carrie Morris, 23, of Chapel Grove said she ran back to the tattoo parlor, got protective gloves from the tattoo artists and ran back to the scene of the crash. She left the gloves at the scene for anyone helping the injured.

Morris said cars often race on the stretch, and on Monday night she could hear their engines roaring before the crash.

"They race a lot here, probably 50, 60 times a night," she said. "It's called light-to-light racing."

The wreck comes just days before police had planned to hold a community meeting to discuss speeding and cruising along Franklin Boulevard, Clark said.

"This is by far the worst thing we've had out here," he said.

that's exactly why racing on the street is wrong. The only safe way to race is on the track. Those people are lucky they weren't killed

I read that in the paper today. They are still looking for the driver but isn't that kind of silly when they already know who you are and who to look for?

I heard about it last night at work and I watched the news when I got home about it.
I know a couple people out there with Camaro's but I'm not sure who this one is?
I hope they catch the guy soon, they have his license plate, car, and uuuuhhhh what an idiot for running!

If you're going to race on the streets, you had better me man enough to face the consequences!

No more Franklin for me!

Maybe he ran because of other reasons, like being drunk or stoned.
We at the beach had five bikers dead last week during HD week. With the blacker biker in town this week we will have more death because of street racing and other stupid stuff people do when in a crowd.

Richard told me that they're having a meeting in Gastonia about street racing and alternatives to it on Friday night!

Hopefully someone will get a 1/4 mile track in the Charlotte area.......it'd bring money into Charlotte and keep "some" of the racing off the streets!

Charlotte had a nice one until the city council ran them off. Shuffletown Dragway was there for almost 50 years, and the city grew around them. The stupid people moved in, and then started screaming about the noise. HELLO, there is a drag strip there. Did you not pay attention to it when you bought the house, you idiot

I agree. I was talking with Jason last night. I think a perfect spot for a 1/4 mile drag strip would be on the west side of Charlotte. There is a road that runs parallel with the airport called Wallace Neal Road. The city of Charlotte bought up all the land between the airport and the new section of 485. It would be a perfect place for a drag strip. Noise wouldn't be a factor in my opinion because you are right next to an airport. And those jets thrusting out of there are louder than our cars, well some of them at least I don't know if the city would be up for it, probably going to use that space for another damn shopping mall, like we need anymore.

that land is going to be a future rail/plane hub for container shipments. Charlotte bought all that land with intentions of landing this hub.

What about the dirt tracks around the area.........why doesn't anyone complain about them? I don't mind them, but I know of 3 dirt tracks around my area and we don't even have 1 nice strip within reason!

It's not like we're asking for much......just a small parking lot, 1/4 mile of straight away...with stoping distance, a couple flashy lights, may a wall, a tower and a nice little water box!
Is that too much to ask?

No, but.. one word..

INSURANCE - remember, we live in the "it's not my fault" country, were no one is responsible for themselves, so let's sue...

I agree with the insurance bit. The liability of running a drag strip is probably astronomical.

I was reading in the newspaper yesterday and it had an interview where Bruton Smith (Owner of Lowes Motor Speedway) was talking about buying the NHRA. He said that if he does purchase it he would look into building a 1/4 mile track here in Charlotte.
