Headers & EGR

I am getting ready to buy a set of headers for my '94. I am thinking about getting a set without the EGR fitting and then removing and blocking off the EGR valve. What are the potential drawbacks of doing this? I did it on my carbureted '85 5.0 and there were no drawbacks, but that was not a computer controlled car.

Depends if you can get by the emission inspections in your state if you have them.
I've been told for a street car it isn't worth it to take the EGR off, but I don't know 100%.

Good luck, I'd also like to know the pros / cons

No experience removing one on a FI car. But from my understanding is that it will throw a code and the check engine light will come on. Will have to have the EGR code removed by a chip or something. Not sure of the advantages of removing it, probly look better?

When I put my headers on, I kept the EGR system. You will have to have the tube heated and bend it to make it fit correct. I took it to the Ford place and they did it for me.

I do not have emissions inspections in my area, so that is not a concern.

I have noticed that many of the '94-'95 specific headers have the EGR tube fitting in a non-stock location, which would require bending (or otherwise modifying) the tube as Tony mentioned - just another reason why I was thinking about eliminating the EGR.

Here are all the reasons why I think the non-egr headers would be a good idea

1) Better selection and pricing since non-egr headers fit '79-'93 models.
2) No need to bend or otherwise modify the EGR tube
3) Reduction in uderhood temps
4) Elimination of a part (the EGR valve) that can be a sources of problems.
5) Performance gain? I would think that eliminating the recirculation of hot exhaust gases back into the engine would have at least some performance benefit, even if it is minimal.

The only drawback that I can see is the potential computer issue, unless there is something that I am overlooking.

I was hoping to find someone who did eliminate the EGR on their FI 5.0 so I could know for sure that there will not be any issues.

It will yield all of the above as for the computer it is a simple fix with a chip to shut off the egr

Thanks for the reply Dan.

The headers are one of two additional mods that I plan to do before I bring the car to your place to be tuned. Until then, will the elimination of the EGR cause any issues with how the car runs, or will it simply illuminate the check engine light?

I deleted my smog and egr. The only prob was the illumintaion of the check engine light. Dan can shut that off or you can buy a piece that plugs into the egr harness that will shut the light off.

No egr or pump on mine, either, or ac for that matter. SCT chip tune keeps the light from coming on. I'm sure it is worth a few horsepower. I ditched mine when I had the vortech put on.

I put the headers on this past weekend. I went with a set without the EGR fitting and eliminated the EGR. I found a scrap piece of 1/4" aluminum plate at work and traced the shape and bolt pattern of the EGR on to the plate. I then rough cut the shape on the bandsaw, drilled the holes on the drill press, and finished the shape of the part on the belt sander. I took the part home and gave it a little buffing before applying some silicone and bolting it in place. It really looks good (not that my opion is biased). Removing the EGR and the smog pump tubing really freed up plenty of working room too.

I ended up buying a set of 304 Stainless Steel 1-5/8" headers off of Ebay for $136 + shipping (brand new). I thought the price was too good to be true, but the quality of the welds in the pictures and the feedback on Ebay were both impressive, so I took a chance. I had no trouble bolting them in and so far I am very pleased. They look great. I expected the job to take all day, but I completed the header installation in about 3 hours, not including the fabrication of the EGR delete plate.

The check engine light does come on now, but I have not noticed any ill side effects. The car definitely has more power from around 4,000 RPM on up. It's funny, but the car actually seems a little quieter now. The tone is definitely deeper, but the harshness of the exhaust note has diminished. It should wake up the sound a bit when I get the 40 series Flowmasters put on shortly. Nothing sounds like a 5.0 with Flows.

Glad you are enjoying your new found power...let me add that you may want to check a few things on your car, too.

First I would check the balancer to see if the rubber seal is coming loose, this is a big problem on the 94/95 Cobras especially if you rev it a lot or keep it at high speeds. (Open tracking). I replaced mine with a Romac balancer which seals the seal so it can't move.

I'd also invest in some sort of a CAI kit to keep the cool air flowing in if you haven't already.

Several people I have seen had gotten a smaller crank pulley to add more torque & free up more Hp. I don't have that yet, but I will before all is said and done. I have 302 rwhp, that may put me in the 306/307 range. Most importantly, it could jump my torque numbers up to the 340's from 333 rwtq.

I went with the MAC headers, Catback, and H-pipe. I plan to bring the car to the Atlanta Car show but it is loud as crap!

Your car will most likely put down 245 - 255 rwhp with a tune. Adding the headers doesn't give you maximum gains unless you add a chip to the car. Your tuner can also cut off the tip retards in the computer to let you shift without a slight stall. This made a tremendous difference in the feel of my 94 Cobra. I know you have 373 gears and you will definitely feel a difference in the car's get up and go. I used to call my 94 Pokey, not any more. For a naturally aspirated 94 with a stock block, it is pretty stout, especially with 140K on the odometer!

Thanks for the info Tony. I had not heard about the balancer issue. I will keep an eye on it since the car sees around 5500 RPM's almost every time I have it out. I do not keep at high RPM's, but I definitely rev it high in first and second.

I know I am not realizing the maximum benefit of the mods and that is why I plan to have the car tuned sometime soon after I get the Flowmasters put on. My wife has family in Rock Hill and Gastonia so I hope to take her up for a visit and go see Pro-Dyno for a tune at the same time.

I have been debating the CAI kit, but for now I want the engine to look as close to stock as possible. That idea may end up going out the window in time though. We'll see.

What brand headers did you get and are the ceramic coated?
