Cool Clutch thought too...

Hey again all...

I also forgot to ask about the clutch. It looks like the current clutch is on it's way out and I'm planning on replacing it. Any suggestions on brand/type?

I've seen the Ford Racing products clutch setup on Summit for like $250 or so and that comes with the throwout bearing and everything. Is this a good deal or is it a piece of crap?

I've always heard to get a Centerforce clutch, but it's like $375 for the setup and no throwout bearing. Seems a bit much for me for just using the car on a daily basis and getting on it every now and again. I don't even take it to the drag strip.

Plus, my engine is stock...I'm not planning on pumping up the internals or adding a supercharger or anything for a long while (way too much money for me right now) and I'd have to rebuild the motor first anyway (158,000 on the clock)...so I don't think I need a super heavy duty clutch.

However, I do like to get on it every now and again. So, I want something that'll hold up within reason.

Plus, does anyone know what the stock size is (10.5"? 11.0"?) and the stock spline count? (10 or 26?) I have the stock trans in it. I forgot...a T-56, I think?

Any tricks to replacing the clutch? I don't have a service manual yet. Still trying to find one on eBay or something. I HATE having a car without a service manual for it, but just haven't been able to afford it yet.

I would imagine I have to remove the shifter from the interior of the car, but am unaware of how to take apart the dash & boot that's on the shifter.

Any type of link/info to the process would be great...especially if it has pics. I am pretty mechanically inclined and have done this type of work before on other cars, but they have been all GM's. This is my first foray into Fords and especially anything that has fuel injection/computers.

So, any helps/tips/suggestions would be appreciated.

1996 came from factory with a 10.5 inch clutch, 10 spline transmision input shaft

4.6L DOHC11"This kit increases clutch capacity by 10% on 1996-98 Cobra 4V vehicles. It consists of the production 1999 Cobra 4V flywheel, 11" clutch/pressure plate assembly and attaching bolts/dowel pins to replace the 10.5" clutch assembly in the 1996-98 Cobra 4V vehicles.








You mut remove the H pipe with cats first then remove transmission.


This requires putiong the car up on 4 Jack stands and having it 12 to 14 inches off the ground

This is not a job for a novice.

Find a knowledgable friend and ask for help.

A 1996 Mustang Cobra has a T-45 transmission (5 spd).

10.5" clutch, 10 spline, 8 bolt if memory is correct.

Just look for a clutch specified for your year and model as most sites will show "199x-200x mustang, excluding Cobra" and then typically they'll have the "for 1996-1998 Cobra" listed below.

Thank you Phil & Tom!

Wow...the upgraded clutch with the flywheel is actually $25 LESS than the standard replacement without a flywheel. Weird.

What's your guys' opinion on Centerforce clutches? I've always heard of them being good and a couple of guys at work that was the first words out of their mouths when I mentioned I needed to do the clutch.

I've replaced several transmissions (both manuals & automatics) on my Camaros/Chevelles/Grand Prix. I'll definitely have to go get the clutch alignment tool though. It's worth it's wait in friggin' gold. LOL I learned that the very first time I put a 4 speed into my Camaro (had a 3 speed - but it wasn't stock). The next time (and thereafter) I used the alignment tool and saved myself a TON of time. Plus, I now have access to a transmission jack, so that should help save the "let's put the trans on my chest until I can scootch out from under the car" move. LOL!!! I'm not in my 20's anymore to do that stunt. LOL

I'm almost thinkin' of going with the upgraded clutch though because it has the flywheel in it. I'd hate to take the current one out and find out it's screwed and/or can't be turned/surfaced...then my car would be down until I could get the flywheel. Not a good idea since she's a daily driver.

The T 45 transmission has an integral bell housing.

Unlike the T-5 and GM transmissions set ups you mention.

Never owed / purchased / had experience with a center force clutch

I do know the OEM Ford and FRPP units are tops for the application, they are made by Valeo in Italy.

The 8 bolts refers to is the # of bolts that hold the Flywheel to crankshaft

DOHC have 8

Truck engines have 8

SOHC have 6

I can attest to this for 96 to 98 4.6 engines

Phil,

Thanks a bunch for the info. I appreciate it. I believe I'll be ordering a FRPP clutch this weekend. I saw the pricing on the Centerforce and just seems insane to pay that amount of money for a basically stock motor that I have...so it's like wasting money to me.

I'll probably upgrade to the 11" clutch so that it has a little more life and grip power.
