On my refurbished white '96 Cobra, I have Bassani mid-length, ceramic-coated headers into a Bassani high-flow, catted X-pipe (removable cats), then to a mandrel-bent, one-off stainless cat-back that includes Flowmaster dual-chamber mufflers and Magnaflow bologna-cut, stainless steel tips. It sounds great, and people often comment about how much they like the sound of the car.

To be honest, however, if I were to do it all over again, I wouldn't get the Bassani mid-length headers. They are hand-bent individual tubes that merge into a press-fit collector, and they are bent to fairly loose tolerances. Both times they were removed to have head work done, the mechanics cussed the day that these individual-tube assemblies were invented. I had to get a replacement tube because one of the tubes rubbed against the transmission housing and vibrated/chattered to beat the Dickens, not to mention the heat that it radiated through the transmission housing. The one-piece mid-length coated headers are a better call for the '96-'98 Cobras, mostly because of the one-piece transmission/bell-housing assembly on these cars and the clearance issues that this causes.

Another issue with the Bassani headers is especially relevant for those who have lowered cars: Since the collectors of the Bassani headers are essentially glued-on with a very light layer of high-temp RTV sealant, they are prone to getting knocked loose when the car bottoms-out on speed bumps. My car has been lowered 1.5 inches, and I now have a "Check Engine" light (Code P0133) due to an unfortunate encounter with a nasty speed bump at St. Pete Beach.

cheers,
