Angry BBS RK Plasma wheels, peeling

I have had a set of BBS RK Plasma wheels (18x8.5 and 18x10) since 2002 (bought them when I had the 2001 Cobra). After 8 years of service I noticed a bubble forming on one of the 18x10 wheels. Wheel cleaners, road scars, etc has taken it toll on the coating. Sure enough, the painted coating peeled off. I assumed they were a ceramic paint similar to the type used on headers, not. Since one wheel peeled, I decided to complete the removal of the coating on one wheel ( used wheel cleaner and a pressure washer). What looked like a black coating was actually a dark brown (goes with the comment my wife said about the color change, looks s**tfull ). Now have to consider what to do next with the wheels. May just have them media blasted and powder coated black, or powder coated with the chrome like stuff, or best option would be to have them chrome plated with real chrome (super expensive). There is a local shop that does reconditioning wheels, I guess I will find out what my options are based on cost.... Attached are left and right rears. The black appearing wheel was blasted with a pressure washer which cleaned off most of the coating (center cap was removed). I do have other wheels to mount to my car so not the end of the world. Oh well, nothing lasts forever.

Good news on the wheels, I found a local shop that can do LPC (liquid powder coating) chrome. They told me to stay away from chrome plating as this tends to peel at the wheel lip which may lead to loss of air pressure at the bead. At least there are alternative options available. The LPC ICE is a bright chrome like coating. They also had Black ICE which is a dark chrome but I prefer the bright chrome appearance. Cost per wheel is $250 which includes all prep work and powder coating with clear coat. I may shop around to see if I can locate better pricing.

I checked out the first place, not too impressed with the samples. However, found another shop that uses a similar process. Powder coating with Vapor Metal Deposition. Looks like chrome, and is a perfect match for the BBS RK Plasma finish. Same price as the other shop, $250 per wheel. Since the HyperChrome X process matches the BBS plasma, I can get away with only having the one wheel redone. Also, comes with a 3 year warranty.

I have looked into other places, not the same and would have to have all wheels redone which is expensive.

I would like to get all of the wheels redone for that insurance so they all match just in case there is that issue when all goes wrong. Considering the end cost of $270 (including sales tax) and the lack of disposalbe income it is difficult to even consider getting just one wheel refinished. However, I will be selling the set after I get the one wheel redone. The shop will take the wheel with the tire mounted on it, removal, mounting and balancing of the tire is part of the package. I was hoping to find a direct contact to the PVD coating company but they have not returned my emails. Considering the lead time of 3 to 4 weeks, I am not sure the process is done in the US.

I took the wheel with me and compared the finish of the hyper chrome x. Exact match to the appearance in the surface texture, and the chrome appearance may have been a grade better than the BBS finish.

Next week I will look into my funds to see if I can send the wheel out.

Began the process. Got a call the following day after I dropped off the wheel. The place where I am having the work done will not proceed if the wheel is bent, out of round or in poor shape. Was notified that the wheel was in great shape and authorized the shop to proceed. I will get the wheel back from them with the tire mounted in about 3 to 4 weeks. So far cost will be $285.00 which is about half the cost of the wheel when I bought it.

PVD coating results, BBS RK Plasma 18x10

I picked up the wheel from the Wheel Collision center yesterday. I am pleased with the results of the PVD coating. If I had the funds available I would do the rest of the wheels. With natural light, it is very difficult to tell the difference between the refinished wheel when compared to the original Plasma coating. The pictures I took used a flash which gave the wheel a slight bluish tint. The picture shows all the wheels side by side. Once mounted on the car it would be very difficult to notice the difference. I would really consider the PVD hyper chromeX for those that are looking at refinishing their BBS wheels. However, if your wheels are not painted but are actually chrome plated, the only option would be to have them re-plated.
