P0430 ODBII error code

After storing my '04 Cobra in a heated garage since November, I was able to take advantage of the warm weather here today and take the Cobra for a 70 mile round trip. On the way back home, my SES light came on, but I kept an eye on all gauges. I put the scan tool on the car when I got home and I pulled a P0430 "Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 2)" Reading up on the causes and fixes, I'm not sure what would be the first possible culprit. Cat's bad? O2 sensors bad? The car has 60,000 on it, and has not thrown a SES light before today. What should be the first thing to look at without throwing all kinds of money at trying to find a fix?

How long did you drive it.
You could always reset the code and see if it comes back.

Does your car have the original H-pipe? Is there a skunk smell when you drive the car?

Regardless of the claim that you can achieve 100k miles on the O2 sensors, they should be replaced at 60k miles. They will degrade over time and use.

I think when it is time to replace mine I will replace the entire H pipe assembly. That will be the next thing to change this summer if I have the funds to do so.

You may want to check for an exhaust leak which may cause the issue.

Hi Ausie,

Thank you for the responses.
The car was driven a total of 2 hours, an hour each way. I had just filled up the tank the day before, and I am wondering if perhaps maybe the gas I put in could have been the cause of the error code?
I did reset the error, but have not driven the car as we might get snow either today or tomorrow.

I can not find or detect any exhaust leaks, and yes, it does have the original H pipe. There is no skunk smell when driving the car either, and no skipping or hesitating through any gears, at any speeds (50 mph or less). I was thinking of taking the car out on the interstate and opening it up to see if perhaps that might clear out any minor obstructions in the exhaust.
The car just turned 60K yesterday, so perhaps the O2 sensors are in fact going bad.

By the way, how do I find out what build number my car is of the 3768 made in '04? Would be interesting to know!

I would seriously doubt that the gas would cause the problem, unless you live in an area where they use oxygenated gasoline for smog prevention.

If you have a scan tool or programmer, you should be able to perform a emissions system test. Actron scanners can do this test. First off, it is best to run the test with the engine at operating temperature. That way you should be able to get a passing or failure of what the issue is. O2 sensors will degrade over time due to the type of materials used. They are supposed to generate a voltage in the presence of oxygen (perhaps in the range of 400mV to 750mV). There may have been some condensation on the sensor that may have influenced its response time. Generally they are not used during the warm up period since the engine will run rich and in open loop until operating temperature is reached.

I have noticed that when my car has not been warmed up long enough and when I hit the throttle the car just boggs down as if it is getting flooded. Not sure if that is a sign that the O2's are on the way out. The one's that may go first are the secondary sensors. I did attempt to replace mine last year, but could not get the dang things out. It may be easier to remove the mid pipe to remove them (more room). At this point I may just replace the entire mid pipe and install new O2 sensors.

Now the question is: what issues will you get with the singe cat set up?

Build number. there was a ford SVT number but no longer in service. I sent in a request long before SVT went poof. I found this on svtperformance web site. Unfortunately you now have to pay for it. It did not cost me anything when I called the original number (it has been a long time ago and not sure if there was any exchange in cash for the certificate).

I would suspect bad / stale fuel first after sitting for a while. I'd do as suggested, reset the code and then run out that tank of fuel before throwing mechanical fixes at it.
