adding horsepower

Can anyone tell me how much horsepower I can add to my 1999 SVT Cobra before I have to begin balancing suspension, brakes, steering, etc.?

I'm not sure I understand what you are asking. What do you plan to do with the car, drag race it or open track it?

No racing in my immediate future. Just interested in how far I can take the horsepower without having to balance everything else. I am interested in bolt- ons - CAI, headers, throttle body, etc.

You can reach anywhere from 295 rwhp to as much as 340 rwhp depending on the bolt ons you have on the engine.

You should try open tracking, your IRS was set up for that.

Remember to have your computer prog when you add power so you don't end up with a lean issue and burn your motor. You will need a programmer and someone with tunes.

Thanks. I was going to buy a Bama tuner anyway. Will that take care of the issue?

As long as you advise them of your mods so they can send you an appropriate tune each time

I think I understand your original question...You should be able to add any/all bolt-ons without having to upgrade your suspension and brakes BUT that all depends on the driver. That engine makes about 280 RWHP stock and with every bolt-on made and a tune, you'll likely not exceed 325 RWHP. You already have enough power to get in over your head on the street.

Tony has the best advice for you. You should sign up for a track day so you can find and push the limits of the car as-is. Then you'll know where you need to upgrade the car. You will likely see that the car makes plenty of power but the stock brakes and suspension could use some improvements.

Even though these Cobras are great cars from the factory, there are lots of improvements in the aftermarket. Also, don't rule out custom dyno tuning. You will get a much better (more efficient and safer) tune than any mail order system can provide.
