Need Help With Pinging

Okay guys. my snake has 93000 miles and was pinging under hard acceleration in 3rd and 4th at mid to high rpm with base timing set at 10 degrees (factory specs). As I suspected, it still had the factory O2 sensors in place.
I just changed them and added a BBK cold air induction. I thought, okay I should be able to bump it up to 14 degrees now with no problem (actually set it at 13.5). I'm still getting some ping at mid to high rpm in 3rd and a little in 4th the first time I took it out and I run premium gas.
Does it take a bit for the computer to retrain its self or is there something else I need to do? There was a noticeable difference in power!

Thanks in advance!

What is the condition/age of the plugs, wires, cap and rotor? When was the last time you cleaned the injectors? With higher mileage you have some carbon build-up that is probably leading to your pinging problem. I ran 16* base with no problems, while a friend could only run 14* in his higher mileage 94 Cobra.

Do the basics listed above and give that a shot.

Another thing to do is to clean the MAF sensor elements. The small element wire gets dirty and give inaccurate readings to the computer. You have to take the MAF meter apart and clean with a Q-tip and alcohol, (not Jack Danials or tequilla). Be careful to not break the wires.

All the above parts were changed about 13000 miles ago and ran injector cleaner at that time also. Probably should run some more through, I'm sure it would help some.

As far as the MAF cobrapace94, that has never been done since I bought it with 56000 miles on her, so that might well be all or some of the problem.

Thanks for the ideas!! If someone else has any other thoughts or ideas, fire away!!

Cleaning the MAF is especially important if running a oiled air filter such as a K&N filter. I have heard good things from people that have cleaned their MAF meter.
Keep up informed.

Many thanks Your fix worked although I did a bit different than you suggested. Instead of taking it apart, I used brake cleaner and sprayed it in there! The wires were black before I started and nice and shiny when I finished, not only did it take care of the pinging, it also produces more power now!!

P.S. I saved the JD & tequila for myself

Thanks again!! It was a real ping in the ass for sure!! I would have someone playing with me, I would mash on it and almost immediately have to back off unless it was in the winter and cold out Talk about an embarrassment, especially if it was a rice burner or a Camero:cussing:.
I'm running my base timing at 13.5* right now, I might try going to 16* like Black Snake and see how that goes.

Sorry this is late, but I was having a problem with my '93 5.0 LX...pinging and rough idle when cold. The car has 110K on it so from the preventive maint standpoint, I changed the egr valve, the evp, and gaskets. I also cleaned out the throttle body with brake cleaner. Since the fuel pump was singing like axl rose, I replaced that as well. I think if I'd just cleaned the tb, I would've been okay, but I've been losing just a little coolant (a pint over a period of a year) and suspect the gaskets around the tb spacer were deteriorated. In any event, she idles like new and no more pinging. Car still makes me giddy.

I sprayed the brake cleaner in as well to clean the MAF and it looked pretty clean, but then I decided to take it apart and there was still black stuff on the back side.
